I am sure someone here can chime in on whether or not you have an intercooler in your van.
does it look like a small radiator in front of my radiator? If so then I have one.

Slowing down a bit to put all the clues together - p0472 with low power and soot out the exhaust... and a chip.

Step 1: Seriously... pull the chip. One time I was 400 miles from home and chasing my tail because of a bad connection to the chip, and I'm not the only one that has fallen victim to this impish trickster.

If that doesn't clear it up right away, then don't get discouraged - now we're troubleshooting the truck with one less variable. Exhaust leak... bad juju on a turbodiesel. Absolutely zero soot belongs anywhere under the hood, so a soot safari is in order. If you see a five-O-clock shadow on any part under the hood, there's your exhaust leak. When I had leaks, they were so bad that I could put my hand near them at idle and feel the fire breathing dragon's breath.

My '03 E-450 chassis short bus did not have an aftercooler and I do not believe that vans have them. That other radiator that you have up front is most likely your A/C condenser. If you need any parts for that ask me before you buy, I'll let you have them for the price of shipping, what I have left is past due a trip to the scrap yard.

lol.Thank you for the reply. I will plug in the programmer and de-tune the tow setting i have it on and put it back to normal. I haven't seen any soot really anywhere on the engine but maybe its small. But, ill de-tune and and go from there.

Spoke too soon

Got back in the truck just now and it was back to its old ways again. Black smoke and a bit sluggish. When it has good power i can distinctly hear the turbo and when it doesn't i only hear it faintly.

K, so now you know it wasn't the tuner. Leave it out of the equation. Are you 100 pct certain all your boots on the pipes are tight and your air filter is in business???

Backing up a bit!!!! Reread. Sorry.

Did you remove the tuner completely or just switch it to a stock setting????

Reason I say is because I have a TS6 and regardless...........sometimes it works, next turn of the key, it's at a bar somewhere. Totally different gal to drive down the road.

(Still haven't figured mine out but the symptoms are like having a blind date)

Denny.

You'll be eyeballing every rubber boot with T clamps from the radiator to the firewall.

Could/would the power be intermittent with a split/poor seal?
