Let's say I were to do the axle swap with 3.73 gears. How would that affect my gas mileage with stock wheels and tires?
Well, that kinda depends on how you drive. Generally speaking you'll feel more torque and your in town mileage probably won't change. As far as highway mileage it'll probably be just a little better than if you turned off overdrive right now. The truck will pull better so either way it'll be a compromise.
If you were to get bigger tires without gears, your in town mileage would probably suffer because it would take that much more to get it rolling again.
It's the whole you can't have your cake and eat it too deal.
Are you talking Air Force? I enjoyed, to some degree, my time at Lackland. I wasn't lucky enough to get any kind of "nice check" after I graduated though. What career field are you going into?

I don't have the specs right now, but these are Pacer 16x10 with 36x15.50x16 MTZ's. Truck has 10 inches of lift. I chose these rims because the center contour was large enough to allow me to make a pattern, drill the rims, insert factory retainer grommets, and install the factory center caps.
Well the front is solid axle swap keeping quad shocks and working on putting sway bar back on also with superlift 8 inch ttb coils with custom mounts. The rear is procomp 6 inch leafs with sky rear shackle flip.
Thanks for the compliment. She's getting there.
I'm not planning on going for a solid axle at the moment, but I love the look of that truck. What kind of bumper is it? I've never seen one with fog lights like that.
More stable ride (like a truck) considerably less camber caused tire wear and associated problems........and about 10 more points for your Man Card for cool factor
