The Ford explorer brochure says that 500 pounds should be deducted from the towing capacity if the vehicle has rear climate control. I have a 2010 V8 model. I'm wondering why this is? Is it because when its on and running it diminishes the towing capacity of the explorer or because of some other reason?

 

My initial guess would be the rear climate control system adds about 500 lbs to the vehicle weight, so to maintain the GCVW, you subtract 500 lbs of towing capacity.

My first thoughts were that it added 500lbs of weight but that is alot of weight for such a simple system as rear climate control so i thought it maybe due to something else??

 

Maybe a larger-capacity compressor for the additional cooling that pulls more HP.......?
