98 Expedition Tranny Issue
Hello everyone,
I'm looking into purchasing this 98 expedition with 141K miles with a 5.4 engine. I haven't went and looked at it yet but tomorrow I'm going to check it out. The owner tells me the trans makes a grinding noise and will not move on it's own power. Any Ideas?
I have located a trans but it mated to a 4.6 not sure if it will bolt up to the 5.4? Also curious on how to tell which trans it has and how difficult will it to be to replace?
Thank you
Michael

My idea is that something is broken. It could be the trans, if it's a 4x4 it could be the transfer case.
A 4.6L will be the 4R70W. A 5.4L could be a 4R70W or an 4R100. There's a tag in the driver's door opening. Under TR will be either a "U" or an "E". "U" is 4R70W, "E" is 4R100. They are NOT interchangeable.
