2017 F350 Towing capacity with dump trailer & mini ex

Hi Guys,

I have just ordered a 2017 F350 Platnium SWB with the 11,400 GVWR package and need to figure out how much I can tow on the gooseneck/5th hitch.

I am a contractor and need to tow a dump trailer with a bobcat mini excavator loaded in it.

The dump trailer weighs 10,000lbs, mini excavator weighs 9,000lbs! I opted for the SWB as this will be used as my personal truck also.

The questions I have is:
Will my new truck have the capacity to tow my equipment?
Will the short bed prohibit me turning with the dump trailer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have attached pictures of the dump trailer and specifications.

Thanks

Chris

towing guide for 2017 model year:
http://www.fleet.ford.com/resources/...e_r3_Oct19.pdf

I would assume 3.55 gears and diesel?

Page 23 starts the section you are after.

With 19K in trailer and cargo your pin wt is probably going to be around 4K might be close on that rear axle of the truck.

Power train itself will pull it just fine.

what tires you have can have a bearing on the load as well. So pay attention to the footnotes. If I were you I would get the truck on the scales unloaded and see how much room you have over the rear axle. As I said I would be planning on 4K with the load and your rear probably unloaded comes in around 3200 lbs. So about 7200 lbs over your axle is what you are going to end up with. What are the tires and axle rated for? Sidewall of the tires and the door cert for axle limits.

Not a chance I'd pull that trailer with a SRW. Also keep in mind that you need a class A CDL for any trailer over 10,000 GVWR unless it's a RV / trailer with temporary living quarters.

From the looks of the axle placement, I'd estimate that you will have 25% of the trailer weight on the pin. If it's even close to that, you'll be way over your payload / GVWR rating.

You should get that order changed to an F350 DRW

With the SRW ordered, the most gooseneck trailer it is rated for, is 20,600 lb. and that is with only 15% pin weight and NO additional cargo in the truck or on the trailer.

Read the fine print on the bottom of the SRW Gooseneck/Fifth Wheel Chart on page 23.

Then look at the chart on page 24 for DRW Gooseneck/Fifth Wheel Chart, and you will see it starts out with 27,300 trailer GVW and goes up for 4.10 gears. The F350 DRW only comes in the 8' box & wheelbases.

If you are planning on making this commercially viable it does seem like a DRW would be the best bet, and of course a CDL. That being said, I know a few guys who are contractors and don't have CDLs and have managed to not be bit.

At the end of the day, either way, I would throw that SRW on there no problem. It will handle it if you drive intelligently.

If it is rated for the load, I see no problem with it.

If you have not bought the truck then a DRW would be the best long term proposition. A DRW as a daily driver has it's challenges. Where I am it works but some areas it would be difficult.

Thanks for all of the replies, I have ordered the truck its due in on the 18th! I have no obligation to buy it as they have not taken a deposit! I already have a F450 DRW but it has a contractors body on it. I was trying to avoid a DRW as I will be using it as my personal truck also, even thou the new 2017 F350 DRW look really nice

With the dump trailer and mini ex its still within the towing limit so maybe the SRW will be fine?!

Often, the answer to this is no. The towing limit isn't the problem normally, it's the payload / GVWR. If you have a 20,000# payload rating and a 20,000# on the trailer you showed, you likely have a 4000 - 5000# pin. Look at your door post for the payload on your truck, and don't forget the weight of any people and gear you have in the truck.

Many people with similar trucks have shared their payload rating... It will likely be around 3300-3400#. You will be much closer to your limits if you can park your mini-ex over your trailer wheels.

Sounds like I would be better off with the DRW.
