Transfer Case issues- creating strange noise

hey there

i have a 1996 F350 4wd Powerstroke. under my ownership, the truck has stayed in 2wd expect for a handful of times. the past two times while driving in snow, my transfer case has been making noise while in 4w high. it almost resembles a crackling noise. this seems to only happen after i let off the accelerator and coasting. i'm not sure if this pertains to the issue but whenever i hop in my truck, it sounds as if something is rattling and loose underneath the truck, and this started happening today after being in 4wd both today and yesterday for a short amount of time.

please share any thoughts on what may be the cause of this issue. when it snows in my area, 4wd is sometimes crucial as the town does a poor job of plowing the streets.

EDIT: i forgot one detail. when shifting into reverse or drive, the truck shifts much harder than it usually does , and the noise is sometimes made in 2wd as well

thanks in advance

Brett
