65 F-100 Restoration Advice
#16
Regarding your steering column and making it work with the automatic, the columns did not change a whole lot until about 1977.
That means that you should be able to pull an automatic column from a newer truck, make it fit and only those who really know their old Ford trucks might notice.

Honestly this is the best advice I can give you.
Forget the Crown VIC....
Simply repair what you have.
Get it going...enjoy it as you go.
A small block Ford is as direct a bolt in as you will find. It will fit the the original 6 bell housing.
For a first time build....keep it simple and close to stock because it's really easy to get overwhelmed.

The OP has a '65, so the newer ones would be easier to fit and may provide more options for his desire to install an automatic of some kind with a stock appearing column, since he wants the interior looking fairly original.
Not hijacking. He's looking for general advice. That's what I provided. The link gives him some idea about what is involved even though it is not specific to a '65. It's a clean way to get hazard flashers, using easy to find Ford parts.
