Unhappy Mileage/Compass display all lit up

Hi there

I've owned my 2003 (03-06 model) Expedition XLT for the last year or so and has around 150,000 miles on it.

A month or so ago the milage/compass/temp display didn't do the usual 'blackout' fault, it's done the opposite and all the digits are lit up (see photo attached).

I can't seem to find anything on the net so far about this problem, anyone here able to shed some light on this?

TIA, Ryan

I have to say that for that to happen the electronics are likely toast.

I'm hoping it's a similar problem to the blackout fault, e.g. bad solder connection. But I may be too hopeful! Anyone else with ideas?

The best thing you can do is to remove the instrument cluster from the truck and disassemble it. Then inspect the solder joints, use a good magnifying glass. Fix any joints you find to be suspect, but this is likely not your problem. After this you can thoroughly clean the board, use an electronic cleaner or similar. If you're lucky, it's just buildup of crud over the years that finally has become conductive. If you're unlucky, then you have to find a replacement or send it to a service center. Or if you happen to be an electronic engineer, take a crack at fixing it yourself..

As long as none of the specialized ICs are damaged, the rest is somewhat simple to replace and repair, but it requires you to know what you're doing of course.
