start truck no gears. restart and tranny works?
Hello, 2002 sd 7.3 4x4.
When I start up engine and put truck in any gear I get nothing but the ugly clicking sound when I shift back into park.
Turn off engine and restart ,everything works as normal. Doesn't do it every time 4-8 normal start ups then a bad one.
Brought it to a tranny guy , head scratcher for him.
Any ideas before I start changing parts?

What you are describing is a transfer case that is in neutral. The clicking noise is the parking pawl trying to stop the output shaft.

Do these transmissions have a mechanical "limp mode" that they will go into if the electronics fail?
Allison transmissions can have no gears because of the range switch going bad. If the computer doesnt recognize that the lever is moving then it will range inhibit, I didnt know if these would be the same. Now, Allison's also have limp mode. If you unplug the transmission and put it in gear it will take 3rd and reverse because the clutches are fed directly off the selector valve.
