My truck is N/A and I have not seen a turbo installation up close, so I ask my questions out of ignorance.
Are the down pipes round? Would it be possible and beneficial to use oval pipe instead? If the stock down pipe is 2.75" diam., would a 4" oval as shown in the attached pdf fit and provide better flow at the same time?

Hugh, I don't have a turbo yet. But I want to have one by June when my wife and I move back out west. My truck runs pretty good, but it needs better air flow going up the high mountain passes. Especially when towing a good load.
Anyway to get back to the turbo question. After looking at the Banks installation diagrams, I assume when you say down pipe, you are talking about what Banks calls the turbo outlet pipe that goes down the firewall and connects to the rest of the exhaust?
Banks instructions have us bend the firewall back to make enough clearance for the 3" round down pipe. My question was why couldn't we use a 4" oval pipe that measure 2-3/4"x4-5/8" and equals the flow of a 4" round pipe instead?
Am I understanding things correctly, or am I lost and confused as usual?
Thanks, Jim

the later years that came from Ford had a problem either the pipes being almost flat. Think about this big trucks use round. I think oval would have sealing problems. You can get a tailpipe for an early PS for around a 100 bucks. I did that for up and over the axle the a 4 in muffler and a stick of 4 in pipe sealed everything with band clamps. Had pipe left over
