Brake Dust

I have owned Fords my entire life. 30 years and probably 15 vehicles all Ford Trucks, and this 2017 brake dust is awful.
Come on Ford!

You get the bad with the good. Fords pads do dust a lot however they appear to also be one of the best OEM pads on the market for stopping and longevity. Most here appear to be getting between 60,000 to 100,000 miles on the originals. Can't make that statement for the 17's since I have a 15 but my 05 was the same way. If it bothers you too much, a set of ceramic pads will take care of the dusting. I just keep the OEM's till time to replace and then go ceramic.

The brake dust is new for 2017. 2016 trucks produced very little.
Ford Super Duty trucks have long been criticized for brakes inferior to Chevy and even RAM. There's no more opportunity to increase rotor size except the 450, so I believe Ford has chosen a softer brake pad which will potentially provide better braking feel and shorter stopping distances. The downside is the increased dust and more dust obviously means the pad is getting worn out more quickly.

I think it is related to the adaptive cruise. I turned it off for this reason. It drags the brakes to maintain following distance and speed down hills. I now drove around in tow/haul like all my previous trucks and the brake dust is comprable. Maybe a little more - but not like it was. I drove 6 hours one day up to NY and when I got there all 4 wheels were reddish black. Truck was spotless when I left.

The 2003 GMC 1/2 ton that my 2017 Super Duty is replacing had ceramic pads. The good: little dust. 250,000 miles and stil have the factory pads on front. The bad: Always felt it had inadequate stopping power. I noticed the dust already on my Super Duty. However, it feels like it has adequate stopping power. Much more comfortable with the braking.
