It's an E4OD. That was the only automatic with the diesel in 1997.

Thank you......Mark I bought this truck and after about 300 to 400 miles it loss reverse and was slipping bad in all forward gears. After researching from previous owner and looking thru the invoices in the glove box we discovered this transmission had been rebuilt by a transmission shop just prior to my purchase. The trans shifted really hard thru the gears. Replaced it with a rebuilt trans from local parts store with new torque convertor. This one did the same except it has not loss any gears yet but it slips in the forward gears and shifts hard.

PLEASE help if you can !!!

Mark I went back thru my notes on the first transmission that was in the truck when I purchased it and there were no codes stored in the control module.

Even with the trans that is in it now there are still no codes.

Most likely there ARE codes. You may not have the right tool to read them. When the trans shifts hard it usually does that as a result of stored codes.

I will agree with that......the tool I have is an OLD OTC genesis and to be honest I really don't know how old the tool is but it does have a reader card for up to 2002 domestic vehicles.

I will get it to someone with something a lot newer, what tool would you recommend to use ??

I have a '96 F 350 same as this truck that the trans worked perfect, we took the ECM and speed sensor out of the '96 and put in the '97 and the trans in still doing the same thing.

Was thinking if anything was wrong with the ECM in the '97 this would let us know.

Was this a bad swap ??

That swap should work, but it's not the area that I know best.

I don't recommend specific tools because I don't know them well enough. I always used Ford engineering tools, and you can't get them.

Well if the swap should have worked then your area of knowledge is the trans, then where else do I need to look ??

I don't want to make you angry but is there any other control module other than the one in the left side fender well ??

I know I cant' get Ford motor service tools but I believe there are other scan tool out there that are capable of reading these codes.

And if the swap did not correct the problem then my experience is that the problem may be in the transmission.

Mark I am no dummy nor am I a genius but as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic for 38 years we try parts of off a well know working donor rather going to the parts store and buying parts and being a parts swapper.

Please help if you can, is there a separate cm for the trans ??

That's the only one that is controlling the engine and transmission. It gets input from many places. There is a module on the back side of the instrument cluster called the PSOM. It often causes problems.

You CAN get Ford service tools. Look on Ebay, they are available. You can't get engineering tools. The engineering tools are the only ones I'm familiar with.

There is not. The engine and trans share one. It could be a wiring issue, or it could be a PSOM issue.

Thanks, I will take a look at the PSOM behind the dash.

Do you mind giving a description of what it may look like ??

If I only knew...all I know is that it is an electronic module on the back side of the instrument cluster. It should be obvious.
