34 Gallon tank in 6.7L--Tried to take one for the team

I've been thinking of something lately. It is probably completely false but who knows.
What do you guys think about ford changing the calibration so the tank cannot get run low because of the hpfp failures they saw in the 11-16 models.
Many people claimed that when they failed they had no water in the fuel at all. Maybe the tank was run low and the pump sucked just a fraction of air which caused it to grenade?

the 48 gallon long bed tanks are pretty darned accurate with the DTE

Pump failures were less common (unheard of?) starting in 2015. The pump pistons were coated with a special anti-friction material which helped provide lube when diesel did not.

I decided to test mine as well. Drove it until the gauge said 0 miles until empty went and filled it up. the truck only took 28.4 gallons. how in the hell can it show empty when I still have close to 6 gallons of diesel left. either the gauge is jacked up or the tanks are not a big as ford claims

Every time the fuel filters are changed the HPFP has to be cycled several times until it bleeds air out of the system. Instructions say to cycle the key 6 times. You can hear lots-o-air being pushed through the lines until there is none. I seriously doubt that running out of fuel is any worse than purging air after a fuel filter change.
Edit: Ignore this. HPFP only turns when engine is on. Read Troverman's next comment below.

I did the same thing with the same outcome. I drove it until 0 miles until empty, then 10 miles further. The tank took 29 gallons (compared to the 34 gallons of stated capacity).

My last truck had a 34 gal tank as well, and the most I ever put in it was a hair over 31 gal, and that's with going well beyond the 0 miles DTE as I was out in the boonies and had to nurse along until I found a station. So, I don't really think the experiences here with the new 2017 is that far out of the ordinary. YMMV.
