2006 Explorer Trasponder Ignition Key
I've lost one of my Explorer keys. I uderstand these have an internal chip which communicate with a device in the dash to enable the vehicle to start.
So far I have price quotes for around $100.
.
Is ther any alternative other than shelling out $100 for a new key?
thanks,

Are you down to only one key, or do you happen to have 2 programmed keys currently? If you have two, you can order a blank transponder key, have it cut to your existing key, then program a spare. If you are down to just one key, a locksmith may be your best option as described by Mark above.
If you know someone with a professional grade scan tool, you could also see if they'll program a spare key for you, but you'd still need to get a new one cut.
And if you're ordering keys, you should really consider ordering/cutting/programming two more so you'll never lose one and be stuck going to a professional again.
