$35 to Prevent a Cracked Head...
... every 8 years!
Yes, I just spent $35 to prevent getting a cracked head. I had to do the same thing 8 years ago. All in all, though, it's not too bad to do once every 8 years because it really HURTS to get a cracked head!
OK. Now for the let down. I just couldn't resist (again).
My hood struts failed two weekends ago, so I had to get new ones. The first time I went through this, I really DID get a cracked head when it came slamming down on top of me while I was working under the hood once cold day. This time, though, I was fortunately sitting in the cab when the hood slammed down.
The new struts are such a huge improvement. I actually have to PULL the hod down now with a FIRM PULL.
Just like it was 8 years ago, some of the Ford parts lists still show two different part numbers and two different prices for the two hood struts, but you can buy two of the cheaper one and simply spin the head around on one of them for use on the other side!

There are so many aftermarket sources for these parts in addition to Ford. The Ford list prices are roughly $60 each, but the discounted Ford prices run about $40 each. The aftermarket units typically run in the $16-$23 range (each).
Motorcraft "left" F81Z-16C826-AB - this is the cheaper of the two Ford options, but will work on BOTH sides
Motorcraft "right" F81Z-16C826-AD
Take notice that the aftermarket units have only ONE part number for each side which is just one more example where Mother Ford is trying to take advantage of their brand-loyal customers!
Monroe #901377
Sachs #SG304029
Strong Arm #4578 or #4339
Action Crash #FO1237114
Stabilus #SG304029
Replacement #REPF131306

Got to admit, the Title caught my attention quickly!
You ain't said nothing!
I've had a Hood Support Tool for Struts in my box for 10 years or more! It clamps on the piston rod to keep them from coming down. Best $30 from the Snap-On Man for personal protection ever spent!
Tell the Customer they need new Pistons Struts and they always say "I'll put those on..." The only problem being, I wouldn't be working on their vehicle if they knew how to open the Hood and check some things occasionally!
I've been hit in the head so many times I meet the NFL's Concussion Protocol!
