Steering wheel removal question

I want to remove my steering wheel from the column so I can repair it in the warm comfort of my home this winter. Any tips on getting it off? I assume I need to put a puller on it and it will come right off? Also, I know I have read some advise on epoxy and repair of the steering wheel. Any good links that will lead me right to those posts? Thanks in advance and stay warm my friends!

it comes right off with a puller, but be careful not to mushroom the end of the column like I did.

I mushroomed the end of the column as well. Put the nut on their so the puller doesn't do that. What a pain.

Here is my thread on my mushroom job

Here is one picture in my thread. It looks like I bounced around a lot during that portion of my build.

agreed, use a puller and put the nut on the column to keep the shaft from mushrooming. I also I put a socket on top of the nut to keep from trashing the center of the column shaft.

Get you a lisle 45000 or similar puller. As others have said, back the nut off a couple turns use the puller to pop the wheel free. Then remove the steering wheel nut last.

You can borrow a steering wheel puller from the big box stores. I used PC-7 to repair my steering wheel. Read too many issues with JB Weld. Haven't put my repairs to the driving test but they seem to be holding up under the single digit weather we've had lately.

I think you have to remove the horn wire before you pull the wheel.

I looked at repairing mine but it was very rough. Purchased new exact reproduction one from Macs Auto for $205.

Not if you leave the nut on. Loosen the nut a couple turns, put a socket on top of the nut to use as a spacer. Then you not pushing against the steering shaft and taking a chance of mushrooming the shaft.
