Another truck

Ok, I know I'm broke, and need to get my other trucks fixed, but this was just too good to pass up. Not a 6.0, but I thought y'all would appreciate it. Won't say how much I paid because I might sell this one, but ridiculously, chump change cheap.

Only seen these two pics at this point. It's supposed to run and have barely any miles (refineries have to have this kind of equip on hand, but it rarely gets used or leaves the refinery.

It's an '81.

Couldn't find out a lot about it. Pretty sure I'm seeing dual rear wheels. Wikipedia says these didn't get diesel engines until '82.

Anyone in the Joliet area willing to go by and take pics, basic check, for me? I'll pay for your time. Trying to guess whether it even has a chance to drive back to Texas, or if I should just pay to have it brought down.

Anyone know anything about '81s or have manuals/ shop manuals?

Talked to someone at the refinery, and she said they keep all their equipment in perfect operating condition and it should have almost no miles. She says they got a '72 truck right now with under 1000 miles.

72 should be pre-emissions if not really close to it.

Yep, she said a bunch of the guys there were drooling over it. No telling when they'll ever decide to sell that one.

Ford's introduction to diesel in a van was in 1983 with the 6.9 International. My 1987 had the 6.9 and was the last year for it.

That E350 dually more than likely is a 460 gasser if I had to guess.

Don't they get gallons per mile?

A 460 is single digits, like 7. A 6.9 diesel anywhere from 12 to 20. My old truck got 16 but I had a lot done to it including turbo.

Yeah, I'm guessing 460 as well. Read some forums and the mileage claims rant from 7 to 14.

Prolly so, but this won't be a daily driver. Probably sell it as a classic or use it for local camping.

We had a 460 gasser, '82 IIRC, as one of the ambulance chassis set ups on our town EMS squad. What a pig but even for an 80's emissions hog it had lots of power, and never met a gas station it didn't like.
They quit using them due to fires, too much idle time and heat build up.

Yeah, idle time kills a lot of ambulances. This one won't have had that problem though, and I won't be idling it. Thanks for the comment.
