62 heater core

Mac's used to carry them, when they had some. $400+
They aren't too tough to get to on these beasts, and they can be repaired/brazed in the same way brass radiators can for a lot less than $400. If yours is missing or unrepairable for some reason - If you're creative, many people have Macguyvered similar sized cores in thd heater box to make it work. There's a thread here somewhere on this site with pics, by somebody who has done it. That's one thing these old trucks had going for them is good fan with lots of heat. No insulation, but plenty of good heat.

Leaky
[QUOTE=Tedster9;16792343]Maybe try backflushing it first? But if it leaked then it's going to leak now.[/QUO
Yea of course if it leaked then it will be leaking now.
I pulled the engine back then and put a chrysler torsen bar front suspension on it and have never had it hooked back up. I want to drive it some this winter and a heater would be nice

A good shop can fix you up. I have a 64 and my heater core started leaking.
I have a "Custom truck" so I can't have a "maybe" It's either 100% correct or nothing.
My friend, and local to me, "Ice Radiator" hooked me up. My core was bad!!!
Paul found a core that would work. They soldered what needed to be soldered then called me. I inspected it, and I was completely satisfied. I have a perfect heater core. My interior is very important to me as I have many dollars invested in it. No leaks, no problems.
Shop around, if you have a radiator shop who can't get you what you need, then look farther.

It hasnt been hooked up since the late 80's l was just trying to be proactive and find and install a new one instead of hooking up to old factory one and hoping for the best.

Your putting way too much worry into this. Any reperable radiator shop can check it out. They should be able to do both a flow test and a pressure test. And if there is a problem, they should be able to fix it or replace the core with something close, using the 'same' caps. These heater cores are generally made of brass and in rare cases brass/copper. Even if there where a small hole in one of the tubes, they can solder it or eliminate it from the rest of the core.
Remember, this core only provides heat for the cab. If they have to eliminate one or even a couple tubes from the rest of the core, you will NEVER know the difference in how much heat it puts out.
Also, rest assured, with the pressure they use to do a pressure test,,, your system will NEVER get that high unless your heating up steam instead of just water. And at that point, I would think it would most likely blow a radiator hose first...

I found one that was 99% exact for my 64. Now I think I have a different set up than most trucks I have seen. I have a square box right under my dash in the middle of the truck with vents and pipes up to defroster. I found mine at Mill Supply, Inc out of OH. The part I ordered was 50-557 and was $70.15! I didn't think that was too bad given what people wanted for repairs or to re-core an old one.

I lost my heater core last year, had a run around with a local repair shop. SO, OK I can do this, went off in my head.

Yes it is very important that it is done correctly and is tested properly before installing!
I have used mine in the spring and a lot this fall. No issues.
Good luck,
Hammy
