Alarm Issue and Starting Anomaly...Related?

As would be expected things deteriorate on a 16-year-old truck. My alarm has, on a few occasions, decided to annoy anyone around by activating for no apparent reason. This has happened in various conditions (in the parking lot, in the driveway, right after I've driven it, or sitting half the night). I chalked it up to aging circuitry.

Now I've picked up something new. Over the last few weeks my truck may or may not arm. It seems to be a flip of the coin. I'll drive to the store and I push the button on my remote and the truck goes "beep"..."beep". 10 minutes later I drive home, park the truck, push the remote, and the truck goes "beep"...and that's it. My alarm light is blinking two quick flashes when this happens.

Since this has started my truck has begun randomly having a delayed start. I'll disarm the truck, turn the key, and nothing happens for about 1 second or so (seems longer) then the truck starts normally.

Both of these issues started pretty close to the same time. I would normally go straight for a starter issue but I don't know if these might be related. I'm the second owner so have absolutely no idea about the Ford anti-theft system, how it's connected, or what the blinking lights mean.

I'm considering disconnecting the anti-theft system to see if that makes a difference but, as stated, I have no idea how it's connected, what I might disable, or how it works. Was there any documentation published on it?

Thanks in advance.

How are your battery /ground connections? A lot of electronics on these rigs, however not nearly as much as the new ones. Poor grounds/connections or weak batteries can create havoc.

They are all good. First thing I checked (should have mentioned that). Just replaced both alternators a few months ago and cleaned all of the electrical connections while I was at it.

Something kinda similar going on with my truck currently. In the superduty forum. I will be following your thread closely.

My Ford branded security system had a mind of its own. Randomly going off in the middle of the night. Finally got tired of the annoyance and removed it. Problem solved. I recently replaced it with a new Ford Branded security system and it has been working great.

I think when your truck only beeps once, it could mean it thinks one of the doors is open still and doesn't arm.

Probably true. Is there a separate door sensor installed for the alarm? My dome light goes out when all the doors are shut so I assume that my door switches are working.

How much is involved with removing the alarm system? It's 14 years old so it's going to have its issues even if I fix this. It started fine over the weekend but it was a coin flip whether the alarm would arm or not.

There is no extra sensor for the doors. It should be tied into the dome light. Sounds like your door switches are working ok.

I never removed all the wiring. To get it to stop misbehaving, I unplugged the module and had to reconnect the ignition wires that passed through the module. My replacement alarm was the same exact one I had before, so reinstall was fairly easy.

Thanks for the info. Did you get the alarm from the dealer or somewhere else? Part number? Your 2002 and my 2003 are essentially the same truck (wiring is the same) and I'm wondering what you ordered to replace your aging system.

Thanks for any info!
