Calling all Viper Alarm/Keyless/Remote start experts
I have a Viper 5704 remote start/keyless/alarm system installed in my truck. Installed it self about 2 years ago without any issues. Over the past few days it has taken a turn for the worse though. I remote started it while in the store the other day, as I was walking out the truck died. Just like when you hit the break without the key. So I thought maybe I bumped it when I was unlocking the truck. I did smell a slight electrical smell inside the truck but it went away. Fast forward to this morning. Remote started the truck before I headed out to plow and it ran for about 8 mins, then again shut off. Wait for it.......then the alarm started going off, truck wouldn't unlock with the remote, horn honking, etc. So I run out and unplug the brain of the system, everything stops. The truck starts with the key fine and drove to work. So I am assuming it's something alarm related but was hoping an Viper expert could point me in the right direction.

It sounds like a grounding problem. I have a Bulldog remote start in my Crown Vic and I know (from sad experience) that if some of the lead wires make ground it causes all sorts of problems. If the door trunk makes ground the inside light comes on, and if the fuel injector wire makes ground, the engine won't turn off.
Could be the smell you had was a lead fusing to a ground, and now just the problems from it.

It was weird. All the lights were on,radio, blower, etc but truck wasn't running. The truck has seemed to be slower starting the last week. Kinda like it was ramping up and then right there at the end it would fire. Not sure if those were related or not. I was half wondering if my starter was going. Chasing wire will be fun. There is only like a million of them.
