'06 Navigator - Dead, then Alive! Plus P0606

Hey all. I'm a newbie to the Ford world. I've worked on European cars for years, but my new to me '06 Lincoln Navigator (181,000 miles) is stumping me.

She died in the parking lot at work when I tried to start her. Just a blip when I turned the key, then nothing - no lights, no start. I turned off the key, said a few choice words and tried again. She started right up.

Then when I got back I turned her off - everything blipped again. No lights, the step boards didn't retract, no nothing. I went inside to eat and 30 minutes later she started right up.

I have a P0606 and P0430 error codes. I've done a little research on the ECM re: the P0606 code.

I'd appreciate any help you can provide. Like I said, I'm new to this Ford world.

Thanks!

That P0606 code pretty much paints the picture...your ECM is failing and needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the info. Can I just replace the ECM with one from a salvage yard with the same part number... or will I have to get the replacement reprogrammed at the dealer? What about the keys?

I'm fairly certain if the ECM numbers match you're good to go. As to the keys, I'm not sure if the key codes are stored in the ECM or the security module. Logic would dictate the security module but perhaps someone that has changed the ECM can better answer that for you.

P0606 doesn't always mean dead PCM/ECM. In another section of this forum on a Power Stroke, they were chasing some rabbits with this as well, might be worth a look even if it's a different engine:

Other than that, at the very least I would try to first clear the PCM by disconnecting the battery and shorting the battery cables for 5-10 minutes and see if this cures the issue. If the issue comes back, an attempt to reflash the PCM would probably be the last resort before replacing it.

As for replacing it, according to the manual it has to be reflashed with "as built" data. At the very least, even if you happen to grab one from an identical vehicle (same trim level, same options), you will have to reprogram the keys as the key codes are stored internally in the PCM, I also believe there is some sort of ID code "marriage" between the PCM and another module, perhaps instrument cluster or VSM or something along those lines, but not sure. If this is the case, then it has to be reflashed and not just programmed for keys.

Just to clarify, if you end up needing to replace the PCM you will need to program it to your VIN, and program it to your keys. You will need two PATS keys, both cut to your ignition cylinder. So if you only have one, you'll need to buy a second key.

Some sellers on Ebay will sell you a PCM that they will program to your VIN and include a set of programmed, uncut keys to go with it. This is honestly a good option because if you have the dealership program the PCM you're going to pay a bit more. Should be 1-1.5 hours or so of labor, at whatever their shop rate is. But you'll need to locate the part # on your PCM and look for the same part # for the replacement. Hope that helps!
