1954 F-250 223 Alternator Bracket Search

Greetings All,

I am restoring a 1954 F-250 Long Bed with the 223 Cubic inch 6-cylinder engine.

I would like to convert to a 12 volt system. Most 12 volt parts seem to be readily available including alternators.

However I have not been able to find a mounting bracket for the alternator.

I am seeking suggestions as to where I can find a bracket to mount the alternator.

Alternator brackets for the Y-block V8 engine are available but I have not been able to find a source for a bracket for the 223 cubic inch 6-cylinder engine.

If they are just not available please post photos of a homemade bracket(s), or other suggestions.

Thanks for your time,

Bob

There is a specific kit for the flathead six's, but universal alternator mounting kits are in abundance. Here is a sampling.

Thanks for your response.

Can you help lead me to a "specific kit for the flathead six's" please?

I Googled for a specific bracket kit and already found the universal brackets you identified. I have no idea which would best lend itself to my situation.

I have no restoration or mechanical experience. I am an Oracle Database Administer and a hobbyist woodworker. I received this truck from a friend who passed away.

Thanks,

Bob

Welcome to the forum, Bob!

Your engine is not a flathead 6, it's the OHV 223. There are several members on here who have fabbed up a bracket for their 223's. Here's a thread:

Hi Bob and welcome. I used a universal bracket for a small chevy. I had to do some modification on it tho to get the lower bracket to match the stock bolt holes. Also had to enlarge the slot on the upper bracket.

This is the bracket I used on my 254 six. If your adjusting arm anchors on a water pump bolt you should be good to go. Note that you will want to install a small diameter pulley to compensate for the lower RPM engine. They are available in wide and narrow sheaves.

It appears that the OHV 226 engine has the same threaded bosses as the H and M series engines for mounting the OEM generator. This video shows the mounting bracket for the 216H and 254M series engines.
