Looking to delete the factory oil cooler on 7.3

So im putting a 00' 7.3 psd on an old international farm tractor and I would really like to do away with the factory oil cooler and relocate the oil filter.

I can make the block off plates but wanted to ask for some others opinions about it. The tractor will most likley never do more then idle or low throttle. I dont think i would ever work the engine hard enough to need an oil cooler but what do you all think?

Reason for wanting to remove it is I want to sink the engine down between the frame rails as far as possible and that cooler is in the way. I can use a remote unit if i had to but would just perfer to delete it all together as im limited on room to keep the tractor looking as clean and tidy as possible.

Thanks for the advice

Perhaps there might be a tractor forum where someone has already done this?

There are certainly those types of extremely knowledgeable folks in here who can give some conceptual guidance, and I'm sure they will chime in shortly. It's outside my wheelhouse, so I'm just trying to help keep the thread alive at the top for better visibility so you can get your question answered.

I'm curious about this build so please do keep the thread alive with your progress. How will you work the electronics on this build? How will you make the injectors fire?

I suppose you could fab a block-off plate for each spot on the block. Then decide how big of a hose needs to be connected to each plate...going in (and out) of the filter head.

I have access to the doner truck so all of the needed electronics i already have. I plan to use all of the factory ford connectors on the ecm, idm, ect and build my own wiring harness in between each of them. The fun one will mounting the throttle position sensor in a somewhat hidden location so it doesnt stick out like a sore thumb because the throttle is lever controlled not foot.
I want the tractor to look like the engine was installed from the factory. (That is if a 300hp turbo diesel was stock on a 30's tractor)😂 Going to be a fun project.

I plan on driving it in the spring so we will see if i get it done.

You might want to study the oil flow diagrams. I believe that most of the return flow to the pan/crank case is through the cooler/filter.

That is a great idea. I did not even think about that. Thats exactly why i made this post. Thank you.

As far as future plans mostly just a toy. Maybe pull parade float. Long term possoble weekend tractor pulls for fun. But i would modify later to suit pulling sleds. I definatly think oil cooler would be nessisary running it like that.

I don't have the flow diagrams in my phone, but the cooler is an integral part of the oil and coolant systems. Not sure a 'delete' will work. That said, it could be relocated with some block-off/adapter plates on the block.

Also consider an E-series (van) or Int'l 444 oil cooler and exhaust manifold. They are flipped the other way and are located much higher than a SD oil cooler. Not sure it's enough for what you're doing, but would be an easy solution if it was!!

I should have a couple of these laying around if you want to try one out. Meanwhile, see if you can look at pics and tell if it makes enough difference for what you wanna do!

I like 'different'. You have my support for this project!!

That is a good point. Someone posted the oil flow diagrams on here not too long ago (I'd say two months?). I'm thinking Pirschwagon had it. Maybe someone with better memory than me will know where it is.
