Changing my project truck & transmission options

My project has been ongoing for a while now, here's the short(er) version:

Started with a 1971 F100 with a 460 mated to a C6. The 460 ran ok and the C6 leaked as fast as you could dump ATF into it. Key note: prior owner hit a deer on the passenger side front.

We rebuilt the 460 (and she runs great) and the C6. Kind of stuck in the holding pattern trying to find a new front clip for a decent price.

A few weeks ago, I found a 1972 F250 with a great body, 'rebuilt' 360 and leaky C6. The prior owner had this project 90% of the way done and ran out of ambition. He put a 510368 American Autowire harness in it and everything works. Brakes recently redone with a new booster, new dual exhaust, recovered seat, nice interior. I've probably driven this truck 200 miles since picking it up, and my only complaint is the high revs from the 3 speed. 4.10 rear end.

My plan: take my 460 & C6 and put 'em in the '72, then put the '71 back together with the 360 & unrebuilt (but no longer leaky) C6 without repairing the deer damage and sell it.

My question: What are my 5 speed manual options? I know that the 460 didn't come out of a 67-72, so this might be the wrong place to ask - I just don't really know what year it came out of. Our best guess is approx '77, but it's just a guess.

Here is the link to pics and some more detail on the '71, with engine and transmission info:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...0-project.html

I created a new thread instead of updating the old one because the final product won't be the '71 anymore. I also found out that I had my old school email address in here, so I never got the post notifications. My sincere apologies for never replying to the folks that replied to my original thread.

For the details of the '72, as you'll see in the pics....
He replaced the big mirrors with that little dinky thing that prevents the vent window from opening. Fortunately, the good mirrors were in the bed, although with some home made extensions.
Original wheels in the bed with a new spare also mounted to a Ford wheel
As mentioned above, new wire harness
Recovered seat
New front bumper
Rolled on bed liner
New tires & wheels
As far as I can tell, original paint..... From how I deciphered the VIN, though, the paint color doesn't match up to what is on it. The interior color matches.
New door handles
I took advantage of a NM law that allows vehicles over 30 years old to be registered with year specific plates, found a very nice '72 tag and made it legal!
(this surprised me) Original Carlite glass, all the way around. The windshield is cracked and will need to be replaced, unfortunately.
Lokar shifter that needs to be replaced, the threads are stripped out and it won't stay in place. I've contacted Lokar & they're going to warranty it & ship me a shorter shifter.

The bad:
Rear axle leaks at the hubs
Engine is way low on power - still has stock carb and doesn't run like it's been rebuilt (will be fixed by the 460)
Trans leaks at the pan and the input shaft (will be fixed when installed in the '71)
Steering wheel is cracked & missing the horn pad. Looks like the horn pad is easy, googling for a replacement OEM steering wheel (especially a green one) is not coming up with any results.
I can tell where the prev owner had ambition and then lost it with the harness - some of the connections are perfect and some need re-work. We've spent a few hours re-doing some of that but it hasn't been too bad. It looked like he lost ambition about the time he stabbed the engine and transmission in, as none of the gauges were hooked up and that is where the wiring deficiencies are.

A walk-around video:

Here are the pictures of the '72:

Your C6 from the 460 isn't going to bolt to the 360. 5 spped options for the early 460 are limited. You can probably get an adapter for an NV4500. Or something like a TKO. You are still going to need a bellhousing, and probably a mid-plate and starter. You can use the 360 flywheel

Fair enough. If I don't go the 5 speed route, I'm going to keep my C6 with the 460 and look at overdrive options. Otherwise I'll sell the 460's C6 separately.

It looks like you are going to put those Jr West Coast mirrors back on, but if you don't, I would love to take them off your hands. I haven't found anywhere yet to get the mirror heads alone, junkyards or internet. $75 each to buy the whole assembly with a frame that doesn't even match my Camper Special frame. All around good looking truck except for the cute little side view up high like that.

Thanks! I'm really happy with the way this truck looks. That little mirror is already gone and the proper ones are back on the truck. If I happen to see a set somewhere, I'll be sure to let you know.

Not to correct you Willow, but I disagree. The two different engine families take different flywheels and flex plates.

360:
C5AZ6375K...M/T flywheel.
C5AZ6375D...A/T flex plate.

73/79 Truck 460:
D1SZ6375A...73/early 79 A/T flex plate without weighted vibration damper spacer.
D9TZ6375A...late 79 A/T flex plate with weighted vibration damper spacer.
E5TZ6375J...M/T flywheel with 11" clutch. 1983 was the year Ford put the 460 back in the pickups. 80/82 there were no 460s. Also the 1st time ever Ford put a M/T behind a 460. ****REGULAR PRODUCTION.*****

The 360/390 flywheel DOES work on the 79 and older 460. The later 460s are a whole different mix, no sense confusing the op with that info since it wasn't what he has. Or to get into everything you need to put a stick shift behind a 460. I was just telling him that's the one part he had that would fit over from the FE to the 460. It is a hodgepodge of parts to get a stick onto the earlier 460 but it can be done will all Ford parts.

If you say so then you must have done it. Then it's got to be one of those times where something about the two part numbers is different but they will physically interchange. Ford did not replace one's part number with the other. Both the C5AZ6375D and the D1SZ6375A were just flat discontinued. Even though my Dealership does still have a D1SZ6375A in stock we don't have a C5AZ6375D here to compare the two. Maybe one was made out of thicker steel.
