If you are going to the trouble of doing this don't limit yourself to just one rpm. Use a variable resistor (with a ****) so you can dial up whatever rpm you want. Mount it in an inconspicuous spot low in the dash or inside the center console. We still have 2 units rigged up this way.

Shouldn't the trucks automatically high idle in cold weather like someone else already suggested? My Ram does, and I thought my duramax before it did also.

Why wouldn't Ford put a high idle switch on these trucks to begin with? Besides the money. Or at least give us the option.

They leave it to the aftermarket PTO suppliers, different PTO applications need different engine speeds to operate optimally so Ford supplies the EIC module that the aftermarket boys can utilize to best support their application. As far as factory high idle in cold weather it only idles up to around 900rpm and utilizing the EIC with an upfitter switch and a 19.5Kohm resistor will set the idle at ~1200rpm

guys, would this work for variable? im not an electronics guru. chart on page 9 of the previously linked sve bulletin for elevated idle control says 1w resistor, 54k ohms would be the lowest speed of 900 rpm.

No expert on the subject but it should, but unless you are using multiple PTO applications that require different rpms variable idle control is not really needed. An idle of ~1200 is fine for extended idle situations which is where a single inline 19.5K resistor will set it.

Experience with OTR trucking found a high idle around 1100 rpms to be just right. Never any paraffin buildup and adequate coolant temps to heat the cab. Unless other specific application require variable speed it is something to play with but not really necessary. One thing for sure, high idle consumes a lot of fuel. Combined with the lower fuel mileage due to inefficient operation of a cold engine and 10 minutes high idle before leaving I can shorten a tank of fuel, normally 550 miles down to 375 or 400 miles. $$$

i guess i got used to my cummins, set cruise and she jumped up to 1100, and with my tuner i could set anywhere in between low idle and that. something else to play with is all!

I am getting ready to do this mod, I called my local dealer and they have a guy that has done many. I have to pick up a resistor,he said a 4700 ohm. Is there a particular brand, website I should order one from?

According to the body builder spec on page 9 https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas/non-html/Q-256.pdf a 4700 Ohm resistor would set the idle ~2000rpm. Might want to check with the guy at the dealer and see if he has done any 17s either it has changed this year or he just likes idling them way way up. Wouldn't want it that high unless you own stock in a diesel station.

I just did this on a 2016 two days ago. A 4.7k resistor results in 2,000 rpm. A 10k results in 1,500 rpm. I stayed with the 10k.
