Looking for drum wheel brake cylinders in a Ford axle mounted beyond a Demag mobile crane

Hi folks,

I hope that someone helps me to find the following out.
I currently restore an old Demag V25 mobile crane (dated to 1958, weight 4.8ton, lifts up to 2.5ton) It has a Ford rear axle as front axle (the crane has rear steering like a fork lifter) which looks like from a WWII truck (Ford V3000/B3000). The axle itself is dated to 1956. I found the sign of Ford Köln (Cologne) on some of the parts. But they do not produce trucks anymore since 1961, so Ford truck spare parts are really rare in Germany.
With the help of Google Picture search, I found out that the brake cylinders of the F4 truck look quite similar. To get confident I made a drawing with dimensions from one of the broken cylinders.
Could somebody please verify if a cylinder from the Ford F4 truck would fit?
I uploaded the drawing and some pictures of the crane to my
Cloud Storage
(https://www.hidrive.strato.com/share/4oite.3mke).
Other screws are not an issue.

Many thanks in advance,
Florian

Welcome. I'm sure the big truck guys will help you when they roll out of the bed on this Sunday morning. In the meantime, it would help if you could post an actual picture of the full axle and any cast markings on the differential. They'll be able to identify it quickly if you do that and point you in the right direction for parts and wheel cylinders.

That's quite a machine! Here are the pictures. Is the bore the same on both ends?

Welcome to the board!

That's a pretty interesting piece of equipment, and it looks like its in pretty decent condition overall. I sure hope you can find the brake parts that you need.

Good luck
Bobby

Welcome to FTE! Those are identical to my F-6 rear cylinders. I recently bought new ones from Rock Auto.
More Information for DORMAN W4511

Looks like an F-3 rear brake set up with the parking brake lever. F-2s have a similar set up but the cylinder has two different bores.

What would be the reasoning behind 2 different size bores on the same cylinder? Seems odd to me. Maybe a bigger bore for the bigger shoe?

Hello guys,

thanks a lot for your help, I ordered two F4 brake cylinders via ebay.com. They will arrive next weeks. I will tell if they fit.
But I'm not sure if the F3 brake is completely right, part 2228 looks like 2030 (as from the front) in my case. But maybe this is only due to the different manufacturer (Ford Köln).
Btw, where I download the full document (Ford truck parts F3/F4) or only the axle part?

The crane took lots of restoration work, it had a broken gear box (water inside, had to change all bearings) and a broken engine (cylinders worn out, but new cylinders were still available because the engine is quite common in tractors here and tractors are collectibles), the optical condition was like the front.

Regards
Florian

Upper picture: 1948/51 F3 (Y).

Lower picture: 1948/52 F5 Parcel Delivery (JH); F5 (T); F6 (TH); F5 COE (W); F6 COE (WH).

The F4 (TL) use the same rear wheel cylinders as these F5/F6's, but F4 was omitted from this parts catalog caption.

You can buy the complete 48 to 56 parts CD from HiPo Parts Garage, but for as much as you need you can probably use screen shots from vendor websites.

Hello again,

thank you very much for the drawings.
Does somebody of you know from which truck the brake shoes might fit? The drums have an inside diameter of 400mm (~15 3/4") and a width of 3 1/2" (89mm).

Regards
Florian
