1986 f150 short box hot rod build thread

When I was real little my dad bought a 86 f150 and drove it for almost 13 years and I loved that truck it was a lariat extended cab and had everything, we took it camping and used it daily. I always loved that body style and when I was 12 my uncles 86 f150 standard cab long box xlt lariat needed the motor rebuild and dad and I did it. It was the first motor I ever rebuilt myself. When I turned 16 my uncle sold me that truck for what we had into the motor and I drove it though high school, I still have it but being I'm in MN and its a daily driver it is just a rusted out basket case just like my dads did. Well the 80-86 is by far my favorite body style, especially the ones with the wood grain dash and the clock in the dash always thought they looked great. Well for about 10 years I've been casually looking for a short box standard cab to make a hot rod out of that wasn't a basket case and this May the dream became a reality as I found one 12 hours south in Oklahoma. I showed it to my dad and he and I jumped in the truck and drove down there and got it. It is a 86 f150 xlt lariat standard cab short box with power everything, a/c, and cruise. It has a 351w HO with a c6 and ford 9" perfect for a hot rod. Story goes some guy owned it and died and it took 20 years to settle the estate and in that time the truck just sat in a garage, then this guy bought it and got it running and found out the motor dumps antifreeze out the exhaust and overheats and didn't want to fix it. Being it's from down south and been stored inside for 20 years it is a true survivor with 48,000 original miles. It does have some hail damage and someone didn't like the two tone factory paint and put a cheap paint job over the top of the original which is peeling off. It has some dings and dents but there is absolutely zero rust on it and the interior looks brand new, the factory dash is mint in it and the previous owner put a real nice cd player in it to. The plan is to pull the Windsor and build a 418w stroker with a afr 195 head and a hydraulic roller cam, rpm air gap intake and a efi setup. Leave all the stock tin and air cleaner on it so it looks like a stock 351ho with a set of headers. Swap in a build e4od and put a 4.10 gear in the back with a true trac. Fix the a/c get a decent paint job on it, put a factory tach dash in it, lower it a couple inches and drive it everywhere with a big smile on my face! Did I mention I'm excited???

A few more pics showing the current state of it from getting it home to the mint tailgate I found in Arizona for it. Mocking up the motor and trans and where it sits now. Currently the box is at the body shop being straightened out and as soon as my accufab 1 3/4 primary long tube headers show up and I'm sure it clears I will finish stripping parts off the cab until it's a shell and that will go to the body shop and I will strip the frame and powdercoat everything on the frame once I get it down to every last part off of it.

Here is a couple of pics of a 70 mustang that I have had since I was 15 and just finished restoring last year. This one took about 6 years to complete. Has a 490 hp 306, t56 magnum 6 speed trans and 5.00 Detroit locker 9" rear end. I'd like to get my truck restored to a similar level of quality and possibly use it to pull my car to the track for fun every once in a while.

Thanks, the breather is for the crankcase. I run a sealed crankcase with a vacuum pump that pulls a negative pressure in the crankcase and then directs it to the separator tank on the inner fender then any oil that gets through settles to the bottom and the breather lets the crankcase gases out.

Beautiful build on the Stang I like the attention to detail. The gauges in the hood scoop and the Crankcase vacuum system something that seems to get over looked on a lot of builds today, no easier way to get HP than pulling a vacuum on the crankcase, it also all but eliminates oil leaks too.

Nice looking truck. I need that tailgate for my truck. Where did you find it?

I actually found the tailgate on eBay but the guy wasn't willing to ship at first as he didn't want it to get damaged but after talking to him and telling him my plans he agreed to ship it. Good luck finding another one I'm sure it exists but it could take years to find.
