2003 Expedition Steering Vibration Arbitration
Hi, I'm new this forum and would appreciate any advice.
I recently got a 2003 Expedition that I noticed an obvious vibration in the steering wheel at high speeds (55 + MPH). I returned it to the dealer and here's their attempts to fix it with no luck:
1. Balanced the wheels.
2. Adjusted the torque bolts.
3. Replaced the rack & pinion. (said it was too small?)
4. Replaced the front wheels and tires (at my recommendation)
5. Had 2 regional reps drive it 40 miles and say there's a problem but they don't know what to do.
6. Filed for the Florida Lemon law : Last attempt to fix and now they say it " Operates as designed" all the sudden, and that all Ford Expeditions have vibration in the steering wheel.
I was hoping Ford wouldn't want to go to arbitration/court and would just give me another vehicle, but it looks like they are willing to go to arbitration and fight. Any ideas of what I can use as "ammunition", etc... to fight so I can simply get a brand new truck that doesn't shake...which I don't think is asking too much. Thanks!
BTW - it's an Eddie Bauer 2WD 4.6L

This is terrible. I can't believe so many people are still having this problem. When you say they replaced the wheels and tires what did they replace them with? They tried taking the rims and tires from another Expedition and putting them on my 2003 and it made it worse. Only when they replaced the Conti's with Michelins did the problem finally go away after a week of farting around with the vehicle.

Keep us posted. I just took my 1 week old 03 Expedition in for the same problem, shaking steering wheel at 65 mph. They rebalanced the tires and now it shakes at 75 mph. I'm thinking I have to build up a history before they replace the tires.

Do you guys have the air ride suspension? I do, and my 03 E.B. drives like a charm, floats, very quiet. So smooth infact that I cannot tell how fast I am going, often zone out due to quietness and fail to realize how fast I am zipping along. Got two speeding tickets this week! One 85 in a 65, the other is 78 in a 55!!! I am gonna be paying for this mistake.
My advice with these big trucks... pay attention to speedometer, it is hard to tell how fast you are really going. Cops love to nail these things as they stick out like a sore thumb due to size!
But I notice that when I take 90 degree turns or sharp turn I get a slight knocking from my wheel wells, is this normal? Does this happen to anyone else??
