I have both an F150 & F250. I consistently get 4 MPGs better in the 150 over the 250. How many loads of wood and how far? If you are staying on your land the number of trips won't matter much.

One question I haven't seen answered was how frequently will you be towing or hauling firewood? The rear axles are rated for significantly more than what your GVWR will allow, so occationally overloading the rear axle isn't going to hurt anything as long as your tires are properly inflated.
I don't think I'll be towing much the first year or so, but after that maybe 9k. As for hauling wood, 2-3 times per year. I'd get as much in the bed as I could fit.

I'm looking at a 2017, either way I go with it. I'll be looking to purchase after the first of next year.

If it's your 2nd vehicle & you are buying it specifically to tow/haul the F250 is probably the best choice.

I'd like the F250 if it weren't for the engine options. The diesel is a really nice engine for someone that tows heavy alot. The 6.2l is not efficient. Ford has dropped the ball in terms of bigger cubic inch gas engines. I've had a few and even the short beds are big. Not the easiest thing to maneuver in tight spaces. I need an F150 with an F250 suspension.

Not heavy enough. I thinking F250 axles with 8 lug wheels, springs, Ecoboost 3.5l and the 10 speed trans all packaged in a shortbox F150 body.

Like the 1997 Heavy Duty. Only with 7 lug wheels.

IMHO...and based on the info that you provided...

Go with a 2012 thru 2016 MY F250 SuperDuty. Depending on the amount of miles that you plan on putting, but the 6.2L will do all you ask.

Of course the '17 SuperDuty is an awesome truck, but they have grown both length and height. IMHO...those are both negatives for a huge truck to begin with.

Good luck with your pick!!

It was the F250LD from 1997-1999, which became the F150 7700 lb package in 2000. Became the 8,200 lb package in 2004 with the redesign, and carried through to 2014 with the 7-lug wheels. 2015's redesign got rid of the 7-lug wheels, and it's a 7,700 lb GVWR package again. Very much an option for the OP, and it can have 2,500 lbs of payload.

These trucks never had F250 axles though. Some years got the 10.25" rear axle, but it was a semi-floating design that never saw use in the Super Duty. The front suspension was exactly the same as every other F150, but with heavier springs and the 8.8" front differential.

Thanks for all the input. I do think that the F250 will be the way to go. I love the look of the 2017. Now if they would just put it on sale after the first of the year.

December 31st might be a good day to go shopping. They can book the sale in 2016 & you don't have to pay till 2017.
