89 F-150 Headlight Relay Upgrade!

Hi,
I did the 3G Alternator upgrade and saw where I could do a Headlight up grade to a 9007 bulb.

However I think I will need to go to a relay set up so I don't burn my switch?

Does anyone have any info on how to do this?

I've Googled but not finding much????

I have the LMC relay kit in my '87.
Cheap little relays, but it takes the load off the headlamp switch and dash wiring. It also provides a better ground for each side. (if you sand the paint off and grease the attachment point)

Buy a spare relay from somewhere else -Amazon for me- LMC are way too proud of them.

Hi,
Thanks!

If I get this relay kit do I have to put in new bulb recepticles for the 9007 bulb????

Not sure how the bulb change works?

Not looking for HID but just something brighter? Thanks!

Just adding the headlight relay kit is going to make a big difference in how bright your headlights are.
I haven't swapped bulbs, because the 9007 puts the axial filament in a different relationship to the reflector than the 9004's horizontal filament.
repinning the sockets is not difficult, but I have to wonder what it does to the pattern.

I think that harness you linked is for running hid ballasts, not going to np29 bases.

Hi,
Ok, if I just connect in a relay I should get brighter lights from the power coming off the battery!

How about this relay???

Hi,
Thanks!

I guess that is all I need to upgrade?

I can't even find a tutorial on wiring this up?

I guess it comes with instructions?

Funny when I did the 3G conversion there was info everywhere???

I'll put in this relay and see how that works?

I guess if you want to go to a 9007 bulb you just wire in new 9007 recepticles and your good to go???

I highly recommend Tony at https://ceautoelectricsupply.com/
I used his grounding kit and headlight harness, and custom battery cables, best quality I've found so far.
His headlight harness fit really good on my 92 f150. His custom battery cables. You can see the hella relays on the fender.
Battery cables.
Headlight relay harness kit.
Grounding kit.

The 9007 bulb has the same D shaped socket, just the pins are swapped around.
Installing the relay kit is straightforward. The passenger side socket connects to the harness and the relays get screwed down near the starter relay, then the relay power wires go to the battery+ side of the starter relay.
The ground from each new headlamp socket can be screwed to bare metal on the fenders or radiator support.

Tony's stuff looks really nice.
Maybe he is our new RJM?

Cube (Bosch style) relays would take a lot of my uncertainty out of keeping spares for the other kits.

Hi,
Thanks Primered, for the pics and info!

I made my own 4/0 soldered lug, mega fuss, harness for my G3 conversion but....

Might go prebuilt for this.

The problem (to me) in making your own harness is having to go to several places to get what you want.

Can be time consuming!

Hi,
Thanks Ardwkntrk!

So if the pins are just switched around, all I have to do is splice in 9007 bulb recepticles and I'm good???

It looks like you buy the harness pre-configured for 9007 bulbs. It's the former headlight plug on the passenger side that would have to be reconfigured to 9007.

You could just buy the 9004 harness, though and get a set of Sylvania Silverstar Ultra bulbs. No mods to your existing harness needed.

Hi,
Thanks that sounds like a plan.

I'll get more light from just going with the relay harness anyway and then go with the better bulbs later!

I want to thank everyone here for sharing their knowledge and helping me out!

I'm going to keep my old truck and want to upgrade what I can along and along!!!

What i was trying to say is that the sockets/receptacles are the same shape. The contact pinout and locating notches are different.

Though it seems Ray knows of relay harnesses that are already set up for the 9007 bulbs.
I'm just behind the times, i guess.

Hi,
Thanks, I finally figured it out!

I think I will do as suggested (by Ray) and stick with the OEM 9004 bulb and just go to the newer/better version!

I'm sure my heasdlight bubs are 10-15 yrears old anyway???

Probably wouldn't hurt to put some new ones in!!!

Thanks again!!!!
