Suspension Upgrade - 1990 F250

Hey All,

I have been preparing to do a solid front axle swap on my 1990 f250 (XLT Lariat, 4x4, 7.3 IDI, extended cab, longbox). I would also like to address the suspension at the same time (I go out into the bush very often, am building this truck up to be a trail rig.) and am just wondering what would be the best way to acquire some more travel? Nothing too crazy, I just find when I leave the beaten path (which is often) that it's common for one of my wheels to almost, or fully, come off the ground in uneven situations, and would like to remedy that.
And maybe all I need to do is do my front axle swap and 350 leaf spring/blocks swap and I'll be content with that result (yes i know 350 leafs will make it stiffer). I'm currently on the fence and doing my research, all opinions welcome.

Softer springs will help. Get an RSK from Sky Offroad Design. That will allow you to use Super Duty leaf springs and drastically improve the handling, off and on road.

That said, you couldn't find a longer, heavier truck to use as a trail rig?

Haha, good point, and one that I've considered, but I love my old girl, she takes me places stock without a hiccup that lots of my friends struggle with in their lifted yotas, etc. The 8 ft bed allows me to canopy it and sleep in the back when I camp, and makes for room to bring lots of deer home! And since paint isn't an issue, I can squeeze it down whatever trail my yota buddies decide to venture down. And supercab is a must for all my tools and spare parts that I refuse to keep in the box (out of the weather, and harder to steal)

That being said, thanks for the tip, will look into that!

Depends on how much money you want to spend.

Super duty (i.e. longer) springs will be the most forgiving for a leaf setup, could even yank a spring out of a lift pack to make them softer.

Coils would be best, but adds a lot more work to a truck that doesn't already have them.
