Spindle, brake hose clearance.

I have found this to be a problem on two restorations, both 1951 F1 trucks. Parts were all new, and from various different sources each time. See photo, the hose crimping rubs the cap of the new king pin. The new wheel cylinder should or could have a better angle, or the hose crip a smaller diameter. In each case, the truck came apart with the same poor clearance. Anyone else have this?

I literally had started a post of this last night. I was wondering if it was the wrong hose, or ???. I got one from LMC and another from O'Reilly's and they were exactly the same. I used my vice grips to squeeze them tighter, but still barely rubs. I assumed they will wear there own path, it shouldn't hit the hose itself.

Maybe you could bevel the edge of the washer on top of the kingpin with an angle grinder.

That is how I solved it, but such 'farmer rigging' shouldn't be necessary. That's why I wondered if I was installing something wrong.

On the 53-56 backing plates they are specific left to right. I think you have them switched

Yes, they are on 48-52 also, but if I switched them, the hose would point to the front, away from the frame mount. All photos that I have ever seen show hose exiting toward back.

how does switching the backing plate change anything? it would just be on the other side facing the same way, doing the same thing? correct?

Backing plate would stay. But the hose angle then would not be good. Plus, in two recent trucks, that were very original 40+ year parked, hoses all pointed to the rear.

There may be something to the switched backing plates. I'm goin to measure it and see. Someone may have mixed them up 40+ years ago.

Does anyone know if the 48 F1 has a specific left and right side to the backing plate? I sure as hell did not notice a difference.

Remove everything off the backing plates and set it on the ground leaving on the side it was on. Then remove backing plates and swap sides. Then reinstall wheel cylinders etc
