F350 Shuts with oil light showing

Hello,

I have a 2010 F350 Super Duty with a 6.4L diesel motor. I just recently experienced two instances where my truck randomly shut down while driving. When it happened, I had been driving it for about 15 to 20 minutes or so, and when the engine shut down, the oil light illuminated immediately. The first time it happened, I happen to be entering a shopping mall and I was able to coast in and park. The second time I was picking my daughter up from daycare and I had to pull of to the side of the road in the middle of heavy traffic and park. Both times I was able to get it to restart the engine again after letting it sit for about 2 hours or so.

I have done some extensive reading on what it may be and at the point I desperately need some professional guidance on what to look for. I have reason to believe it’s related to oil pressure or maybe a temperature senor of some kind. I just purchased the AutoEnginuity with Ford Enhanced package and have been doing what I can to read failure codes and watch various system monitoring. Any guidance on diagnosing this problem at this point would be greatly appreciated.

When the engine stops running, the oil pressure goes to zero. So, the oil lite doesn't mean that caused the engine to stop. Try wiggling your keys while parked with engine running. Could be electrical or mechanical problem.

Yup, agree with Misky. Every vehicle on the road will have an oil pressure warning appear when the engine stalls.

I'm moving this to the 6.4L forum.

Thanks for your replay! The engine runs fine when "cool" and then dies when the motor is hot. I think the oil light is implying possibly that there is an issue with oil pressure or temperature somwhere.

Does the oil pressure warning happen while the engine is still running? Or only after the engine quits?

Misky6.o, what do you mean by "wiggling your keys while parked with engine running?"

The oil light comes on right as the engine stalls.

Not the problem. Your oil pressure will drop below 5 PSI when your RPMs go below idle, and this causes the light to come on as your engine stops. This has nothing to do with why the engine is stalling. It's a symptom, not the problem.

Thanks Tom! So what are your thoughtn on other clues to the issue with the engine stalling in this scenario? Your advice is greatly appreciated!

You mentioned in your original post that you bought the AE bundle. Any trouble codes showing?

I can see codes, mostly showing codes for cruise control. I can rerun the codes and post them if that helps.

Posting what codes you've found would be helpful.

FWIW and probably not much I had an '06 F-250 5.4 shut down all electric and engine while on an interstate highway at 70 mph. I put it in neutral restarted and continued my drive. It never happened again in the 2+ years after the initial occurrence. You're probably chasing an electrical gremlin and it won't be a fun one. Very interested to see what if anything you ever find though.

your 2010 6.4 has a firmware upgrade that detects high oil level....usally due to contamination related to DPF regen. check the oil level and if it is high, completely drain it and put good new diesel oil in the engine.

draining the excess oil only is a bad idea becuase the fuel dilution results in very thin oil that will provide losy lube to your engine internals.
