460 swap in 75
Im planning to swap in 460. The Goal for this truck is reliable, and budget tow rig that can be swapped over in a weekend.
I was told to do with a newer 460 with Efi, 700 Holley carb and possible intake manifold , and change the timing and i should have a reliable setup with 11mpgs.
My Truck has a manual 4spd.. I will be keeping unless i can find a 5 spd for a good price
Parts i have 460 Motor mounts from a 70s ford.
Im open to suggestions

How much of a budget are you looking at?
I am no expert on the EFI 460s but they really do not have much power. Rated for something like 240HP and 390TQ. I don't know how much tuning the EFI could handle and how you make it work with your old truck. Might not be worth the investment.
11MPG might be a pipe dream unless you baby the heck out of it. Best thing that would help with fuel mileage is an OD transmission.
This would probably be around 1k in upgrades. I think you would be better off finding a carbureted version and put an intake on it, something like a 600CFM carb would probably be better (read about sizing carbs on Holley's website...bigger is NOT ALWAYS better). Tack on a set of headers, and a mild cam upgrade.
Stock heads are still fairly restrictive so don't expect big numbers.

The problem with the 79 up 460 is how far down the bore the piston sits at TDC. There's just nothing you can do to increase compression short of a complete rebuild with new pistons. On the flip side, the heads have a much improved raised exhaust port.
If it's in the budget, get a set of ProComp aluminum heads. If not, a new performance timing chain and mild cam will make a notiecable improvement. Of course you'll need a good dual exhaust system as well. Although long tube headers will make more torque, I don't think that little bit extra is worth the headache of installation.
I'm planning a 460 build for my F250 and plan to use shorties, the aforementioned ProComp heads, a mild performance RV flat tappet hyd cam and double roller timing chain. For carburetion I will be using a 735 CFM Holley with annular primaries on a Weiand stealth intake. I'm still gathering parts.
I had thought about putting an NV4500 5 speed trans behind it, but I decided to use it behind the 390 in my F150 instead. I may have another one built someday if I really like it.

I just rebuilt a 78 block. Ported D3ve irons, mild summit cam grind, late model EFI 460 pistons 'flat tops' and decked the block to zero. Drastically raises compression and improves quench which was one of the major power killers of the smog era. Edelbrock carb, MSD with recurved Duraspark, Long tube headers.
