I have a valve cover leak and I have to replace the gasket on a 4.0 sohc, 1st question is can I use an rtv silicone gasket maker? 2nd question, does anyone on here have a simple guide with tips and photos on how to do so?

I would buy a gasket. If you use too much RTV it can squeeze out and gum up oil passages or get stuck in the oil pump.

 

^+1 on opting for a gasket & Felpro makes a nice long lasting valve cover gasket that won't dry out, get hard/brittle, shrink & leak, like the cork ones do. It lasted over 20 years with no leaks on my 78 Merc 3.3L & that puppy ran plenty hot.
