E4OD or 4R70W / Mercon or Mercon V

I have a 98 Expedition XLT with a 5.4 and I am looking to have my trans fluid and filter flushed at the Ford dealer. My owners manual say's that the E4OD takes Mercon and the 4R70W takes Mercon V. My dipstick say's Mercon on it, so is it safe to say that I have a E4OD????? I have the factory tow package if this means anything at all? After past threads about Mercon and Mercon V, I want to be able to ask the dealer and be able to back whatever I feel is right or wrong, or at least what the owners manual say's.

Look at the vehicle certification label in the drivers door jam. Look for the transmission code (TR) on the label. If the label is marked with a U it has AOD, and if it is marked with an E it is E4OD. This applies to 1998 Expedition/Navigator.

In doing a bit more research it shows there are actually 3 options, 4R100, E4OD, and 4R70W. So Im assuming that late production changes have caused an error in the factory service manual to identify all transmission types by the certification label.

A good rule of thumb in this case is to use whatever the dipstick shows for fluid.

Go with the dipstick. Don't believe the dealer when they tell you that Mercon and Mercon V are basically the same. They are not!

Find out which transmission you actually have. Mercon V in a 4R70W is an upgrade from Ford. Your dipstick on early 4R70W transmissions will say Mercon. ALL 4R70W transmissions now use Mercon V. E4OD at least through 2001 all use Mercon. Check this page for help with Ford transmission identification.

No. The only options in 2000 are 4R100 and 4R70W.

My 97 has the E4OD, and the dipstick says Mercon. That is all I use.
