How do I get the shifter out of the trans? NP435 4 speed.

Idiot before me cut the shifter to put a ricer-spec shift know on, so I now need to replace the shifter.

How does the shifter come out of the trans?

Thanks

You have to push down on the aluminum collar (with some beef on it) and turn CCW. It'll turn maybe a quarter turn before it pops up. While the shifter is out, check the end nubbie for wear....or if you have the two piece, check the shear pin.

When I was younger, ten foot tall and bullet proof, I could do it by hand. These days, being a grumpy old fart, I need help....like a pair of Channel locks to grasp the collar whilst pushing down and turning it.

I'll get hollered at for that suggestion but it works for me.

NP435 = aluminum top cover w/8 bolts
T-18 = cast iron top cover w/6 bolts Warranty Plate TRANS code: A = NP435 (N-1965 only) / F = Warner T-18 / P = F350 Warner T-19.
Warner shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) threads on/off.
NP435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, is retained to shift tower by two pins.

To remove this cap, it must be pressed down and held down while turning it counter clock wise to remove it. (Its spring loaded and twists into place, we removed one and it was a 2 person job. Put the trans into 2nd, 4th, or reverse, then one person holds the cap and applies pressure, twisting in a counter clockwise direction. The other person hits it from the top with a hammer to get the cap to go in below the two clips that hold it in.) People unaware use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out the pins.

And or take a piece of 1x4x6 or 8 and drill a hole in the middle that is a little bigger than that shift rod, slide it down and use it to evenly push down (with your hands?) on the collar.

I know I have a pic of the trick some where, its item #4 in the 1st diagram and part # 7220 in the other.

As long as we're here...is there a good replacement for the stock shifter? I don't mean a necessarily "short-throw" ricer lever, but something that fits, works, and will keep my **** out of the seat when putting it in R?

That sounded dirty, but really wasn't
