Distributor

The Reman Cardone I got was from Mexico. The gear wasn't in the correct location. If you get one check it closely before you install it. It's very difficult to identify the gear material since both cast iron and steel are magnetic. I suggest looking on e-bay for a NOS Autolite or Motorcraft . If it isn't for your exact application that isn't a big deal they are simple to recurve. As long as it is for an FE. Keep in mind that Ford had a different advance curve for about every different vehicle they built. The rebuilders don't even try to duplicate all those combinations.

If the distributor is in decent condition and issue is primarily with the electrical components wonder if Electronic Ignition (no points) would be an option at this time? Dura Spark is probably little more involved but understand Pertronix is a relatively direct swap. Recall attempting to start the 65, with the 352/390, on a cold winter morning was a major pain in the backside until installing E.I.? If consider, perhaps feedback from other V8 Pertronix user's would be helpful. Anyhow, food for thought?

You know there is one question we haven't asked. What is wrong with your distributor? Or what is it not doing that it should be doing?

When I have been driving at about 50mph it stumbles at little, over it
and under it is runs fine. I was looking at the vacuum advance and the vacuum advance
arm is binding on the plate of the distributor. So I feel sure that the news that I
get from the forum is the plastic parts on the bottom of the plates must be broken
or flat worn out. It has a lot of slop in that top plate also

Thanks

Sonny

Thru 1971, there were two distributor point plates, upper & lower. In 1972, Ford replaced these two plates with a one piece plate.

The upper and lower plates that make up the one piece plate are held together with nylon bushings. The bushings crack apart, the plate wiggles around.

This plate is available from auto parts stores as are other parts of the distributor.

D2PZ-12151-A (replaced B9AF-12151-A [lower] & B9AF-12151-B [upper]) .. One Piece Distributor Plate (Motorcraft DB-187-A) / Obsolete

ALL 1958/76 FE engines except HiPo's with dual point dizzies.

Pic is of a "typical" V8 dizzy. Obviously 292 & 302 used different dizzies than FE engines.

If you are looking to upgrade to electronic. The Crane XR-i kit #750-1700 comes with new plates. It's not real expensive and you kill two birds with one stone get rid of the points and get new plates. Plus it has a rev limiter built into it. You probably don't need a rev limiter, but it's in there.

i just want to thank you Number Dummy and Crop Duster for the information
well i picked the rebuilt dist up from the auto parts place and brought it home it was just exactly like Crop Duster described grease everywhere, the quality looked bad, the drive gear was not put in the correct place. Guess what I will take it back tomorrow for credit.Checked the part numbers that Number Dummy gave me and could order the breaker point plate for a small amount of money. Ordered the part and it should be here Saturday morning will pick it up and replace it. It doesn't look that hard to replace. Thanks again for all the help. Sonny
