Used Carburator great deal????
Bought a used 600 edelbrock to put on top of my 351C Cobrajet.
It was a great deal at a swap meet... Well....
Whenever hitting the gas it would bog and backfire and couldn't set it up.
I guess the previous owner was fiddling with it and messed up the calibration. It is a 1406 carb. Have owned them before without probs. set the accelerator pump to the outside hole (leanest setting) and changed the metering rod springs to stock...
Big difference... No more backfiring and a lot more responsive. But I found a great post on tuning the 1406 (economy 600) to 1405 (performance 600) settings.
Will be converting to stock 1405 settings and report the results.
Eddys are great carbs, just never bought a used one before.
Also bought a 750 and will be redoing to stock as well another great deal but owner said he couldn't get it to run properly.
Moral of the story... Check your jets and metering rods to make sure they are stock, then you have a baseline to start tuning from.

.
51M1, I was in the same place earlier this summer. The used 1405 Eddy I bought had had changes done. It had a bad lean midrange bogg. I studied up on the carb and bought replacement jets, rods and springs. I put stock rods and springs in which helped but I still didn't know what jets were in it. That's were things went south. The four jets are very fragile. I wrecked them trying to get them out. I tried a suggested procedure to get them out and wrecked them more. I bought a new carb and the truck runs great now. I've got some great deals in the past buying used and saved a ton of money but sometimes it doesn't pay off.

I love my edelbrock. It's a 1405, but I switched it out to 1406 rods and jets. Performance isn't QUITE as good, but economy is better. And as much as I drive, that's important to me. It still hauls *** when I get her revved up.
Like you though, I can never get rid of the initial stumble/bog when punching it wide open. A lot of other guys say that too, so I guess it's just an edelbrock quirk.
The 1405 calibration was richer, thus running a little better. But the 1406 calibration is great for cruising. Higher vacuum and about 2 mpg better.
The biggest difference is on cold starts and the first 5 minutes of runtime. Without using the choke it can be hard to keep going at part throttle. Such as light acceleration through the neighborhood. But bring the revs up and open her up a little more and it takes off strong.
I have 8" springs in mine, and that helped the bog issue.

OK so I just got thru talking with Dave at Edelbrock Carb Tech Support.
Heres the info I was given.
The 1406 is not suited for my application as I have a 351 Torker single plane intake.
However Dave recommended for the application with my 351 Cobrajet 4V using the 1406....
7037 rods (in the 1406 calibration kit) and the pink / Purple springs.
If the engine backfires thru the carb on stomping the pedal it is too lean....
Through the exhaust... too rich
Move the accelerator pump linkage in or out hole depending on the hole that backfire comes out of...
Out / down is leaner.... In / Up is richer.
Make sure the S clip on the accelerator pump shaft looks like an S
if not the inside hole setting will lock up the linkage. (installed backwards)
The large diameter part of the Metering rod is low load / High vacuum (cruising) ..... the small is High load / Low vacuum (stomping it) thus if too lean stomping it you need to go to a smaller tip size. if cruise is too lean you need to go to a smaller diameter on the larger part of the metering rod to allow more fuel flow. and vice versa.
He recommended a 1407 Carb at factory settings for the 351C 4V with Torker manifold for the best performance. A bit large of a carb but should greatly improve performance right out of the box. (which is great because I have one of those too) 75 bucks LOL Great deal huh..... AAuuuurrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!!
I suggested that Edelbrock should sell packages of those darned mini hair pin clips as well as I have searched all over town and cant find any.
I guess he is the guy that can make it happen and appreciated the suggestion.
On a side note, tried some 7347 rods and orange springs which helped a lot yesterday but lost that nasty little pin in a parking lot. Used an old air freshener around the mirror elastic thingy, tied it around the linkage and is working fine until I can get some clips. The knot holds it in place...
People used to call me McGuiver... LOL
Anyways happy tuning on your Edelbrock carbs.
Hope this info helps some of you out.
Cudos to Dave at Edelbrock for the awesome customer support and for taking the time to explain to me how to figure it all out.
Will try to post results of all of this if it doesn't double post it again on me.
Over and Out for now.

Yep I have it. And have been studying and trying combos. Now that I have learned how it works, should be a lot easier. :0)

thx Blackjack :0)
changed the rods in the 1406 with 7047's couldn't find the 7037's and pink springs. Middle hole accelerator pump and what a difference. Just tested without driving but absolutely no hesitation, the other setups I tried were not nearly as responsive . Just Bam!!!!! Sounding more like a Cobrajet now.
