Antifreeze Smell

I have a 99 F-250 SD w/ PSD and I have been getting a antifreeze smell from under the hood. My buddys and I have went all over it and there is no leaks, has any one else experienced this? Its going to make me go crazy until I find the problem or an answer.

Thanks, Bill

Antifreeze Smell

Check behind the pulley on the waterpump. There is a weep hole that will seep when the seal is going out. Most of the time the coolant will never hit the ground.

Antifreeze Smell

I saw a little shinny black line on my steering link tonight. I took a look and there are little droplets of antifreeze on the lower radiator hose. Still can't see a thing leaking from the water pump but thats has to be where it is coming from. A friend with a 00 PSD told me that since my truck has 92,500 that the pump should be under warranty since it is part of the engine. Anyone know if this is possible,i'm going to call the dealer tuesday but was wondering...

Thanks, Bill

As long as you are within the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty it should cost you the $100 deductible. At 92,500 miles it depends on when the warranty went into affect.

The truck build date was 05/04/99 so I should be good for a little while yet...

The build date isn't relevant. The Purchase Date is When the 5 year warranty period begins. sk

My dealer just replaced the WP on my 99 psd at 71k. He also replaced the Snake belt as part of the warranty service. my anniversary (purchase) date for the 5 year period is up on 12-31-03. Most folks have at least 100k on their truck by the end of the 4th year so I'm the exception i guess. Lets hope that all your problems come to light before you get too far past the 5 year date. they become very expensive to FIX after the warranty period has expired. sk

I am looking at a truck right now that didn't leak when I pressureizied it...however when you look at it from underneath. you can see where it is leaking from the water pump by the dried stains on the hoses...

Guys, should I have the thermostat housing changed also, do they have a problem with them leaking? I was talking to a guy at the bank with a 01 PSD and he said his waterpump had sprung a leak also and the dealer changed the waterpump and thermostat housing along with both hoses. He told me the mech. told him they should be replaced also to save from any further problems.

Yes, change the housing. We replaced the t-stat in our T444E at work without changing the housing and it leaked.

I had my lower hose clamp break on me after around 3000 miles. It might be worth checking. I really had to look closely at it to see it broke. I just changed the clamp myself rather then wasting the time going to the dealer.

Just replaced my WP. I was smelling anti-freeze also but saw no visible signs of leaking. Shortly thereafter the pump started squealing, toasted bearing. Ford waterpumps are a frickin' rip off.

Antifreeze Smell

Well I took it into the dealership today and the ServiceMgr took it out,oh it has a noise( loud ticking) on deceleration now too. You can see the coolant on the bottom radiator hose he looked it over and says its leaking but he doesn't think its coming from the waterpump,so I asked where he thought and his reply was not sure but we'll get it in and do a pressure test and we'll have to let you know. There are no signs of the waterpump leaking except a few marks of what looks to be dried water or antifreeze on the lower side of the pump. I'm a little concerned with this,he acts like he doesn't want to change the pump out he seems to want me to just keep an eye on it. I did set up a appointment with them though to have a pressure test done and to have it checked over. I ask him not to go over 100.00 dollars to have it tested and he said i'll see what I can do. Have any of you guys had the same symptoms? I am having a bad feeling about this and they are the best dealership around here,I even checked with the International dealer and he said they recomend them highly also. What to do what to do... My luck it has a leak and a noise (ticking) now coming from up top on deceleration and all I get is we'll look at it not sure how much it'll cost but we'll look at it... Any ideas guys? I'm really bummed out...
