Going to look at a v-10. What to look for?
Going to look at a 2001 f-250 v-10 with 72,000 miles on it. I have Auto Eginuityto take with me. What do I need to look for as far as checking the motor out? I pulled the car fax on it and it said the exhaust manifold gaskets were replaced two years ago. Is there any sensors or anything that I should do live record or anything on to see any potential issues?

Check exhaust manifold studs for any odd looking dealios(mine has CYlinder one patched up with liquid metal or some such. I'm leaving it until it leaks again or another one needs attention. Since we go well over 100,000 miles, these things need attention. Check the torque on the plugs. It need to be higher than quoted in earlier manuals. It needs to be over torqued to 15-20 lbs(not sure of exact number) and then checked a couple of times between changes. I would rather know sooner than find out later that the plugs/threads were hosed.Guys with more experience may have better ways to check the plug situation, so hang on til some more folks drop in..
Look at suspension for any weird looking contraptions...the more service records the better..
I was willing to put up with a few things as the price was right, and I can always dredge up $500 or so to fix the piddly little things..one at a time. My rear springs sagged a tad, so I got an RAS. As it is adjusted atm, I am now a tad under 3/4" high in the back with a 2" level kit in the front...maybe I'll adj the RAS so I sit level empty...why? I dunno, cuz I can?

As CharlyG says, exhaust, plugs! Also check ball joints, front sway bar links, steering box play, PCV valve and hoses. These are the most common issues on these trucks. Outside of these it is just normal wear and tear maintenance. There are some upgrades you can do to the tranny, but normal service will yield lots of miles.

I thought so too on the mileage. When I saw 72,000 miles, one owner I said we need to look at this for sure. Truck is actually for my dad. We had to look for a new one since his oil change place forgot to put oil back in the last one. Made it 3/10's
of a mile down the road before seizing. It is nice enough that i would trade my 7.3 for it for sure. Have always kicked myself for not buying a crew cab.
No Florida, sorry. Joliet, IL.

They did. They gave him $4,100 which was way more then the truck was worth. It didn't have a straight not rusted panel on it. Plus it had 350,000 miles as well. So he made out good for value. But $4,100 doesn't by another truck. And the other one was still running down the road. So it took him a while but I think we found a good one.
