I'd just like to point out that replacing it with the old style is as much or more work than removing, repairing and adding a grease fitting to the current one and is significantly more expensive.
Hey, it's just one option, let the buyer beware, YMMV, all that jazz.

i doubt you could shift on the fly into low it would grind and bounce out you should never HE-MAN the t-case into gear anyways but i dont know much about 92-96 so not sure what tcase you got but b.w 1356's like N. over P. to get into low and they dont like pressure on the gear set as they age i find as well i.e be in N. and be on flat ground rock it back in forth a bit if need be even shut the truck off while you try
and the idea of switching to 87-91 shift section is good too its not straight lined shift either keeps from accidental shift on the fly into low aswell

My '85 F-250, '75 CJ5, and '71 Bronco (both with its original Dana 20 and with the Atlas transfer case) could all be shifted into low without any special pushing or pulling on the shift levers, and without worrying about what gear the trans was in. I never had any trouble with it though, you just don't do it.
