Semi-float axles have been known to fail under use with heavier weight vehicles (e.g. camper conversion), use of wheel spacers (creating more leverage on the axle), or both. I have also seen some reports of failure due to water intrusion/rusting/corrosion of the axle race surface (part of the axle, not separate/replaceable) on the SF axles, more so than a full float axle.

Pros - more reliable under extreme duty
Cons - more $$$

Yep you are correct.

The semi-floaters axle shafts are usually the inner race for the axle bearings. When the bearings go bad your axle can become junk. Plus changing axle bearings on them can be a royal P.I.T.A.!!!

And on the full floating diff you can pull the axles with the van's rear tires still on it and sitting on the ground!! And you can pull the axles without pulling the diff cover. You can't do that on a semi-floater!

The full floater weighs more, has more parts to service ( 4 bearings instead of 2, separate hubs, etc. ) so it will cost more. But it is much stronger. And if you do any heavy towing/hauling it's the smart choice.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for that D60?
