Power steering diagnosis

New to me 2006 F250 is having some power assist steering issues. Did the search thing and it seems there can be many causes for this apparently common problem. I'm looking for some comprehensive diagnostic procedure.

So, the truck is a well worn 2006 F250 4X4 5.4 gas A/T. Current mileage is 285,000 km. I noticed it has a Hydroboost brake system, which is something new for me. What is happening is that I intermittently lose power assist while steering. Braking seems to be unaffected. Highway driving seems to be unaffected, but I have noticed the problem at slow to medium speeds. The power steering pump whines slightly when assist is reduced, but there is no whine under normal conditions. The reservoir is full. I have not (yet) flushed the fluid or bled the system. I have noticed no interaction between braking and the loss of power assist. The steering does seem to center normally. There is a certain amount of wander, or loose feel to the steering at highway speeds.

Some of the solutions suggested include faulty front axle ujoints, flushing/bleeding the power steering fluid, faulty shuttle valve in the Hydroboost assembly. I do expect to do a fair bit of maintenance. The tires are worn and I expect there will be worn suspension components, but I would like to isolate the cause of the steering difficulties.

Check to see if someone in the truck's past put a inline filter on it.
If you find one remove and retest it.

To really test the system you need a power steering analyzer for flow
and pressure.I can pull up the Ford workshop data and post the PDF if
you want to try.

Thanks. That's certainly a nudge in the right direction. I was not even aware that there was such a tool. Of course, my toolbox does not have one. However, I will check for a filter and general line condition before I attempt a flush and bleed.

The flush may be what is needed.
Does the fluid smell? Smell as in burnt or nasty.

A 2006 F-250 5.4L gas engine with hydroboost?

Interesting combination. Is this a chassis/cab truck?
