Addressing the Rust - it's bad

Good afternoon Bump'rs

It's time... I need to address the rust issues.

Above the windshield on both sides of the cab, I have rust all the way through the outside sheetmetal.

The plan is to cut, flick, grind, whatever, loose metal off... apply a rust converter of some sort, put on some anti-corrosion primer, bondo it, apply some more primer, then paint.

Gurus... I bow to your guidance.

What's the best rust converter to start with on this issue?

If pics would help, let me know.

Thanks much

Rust converter is only a stop-gap measure.

The plastic filler wont have anything to grab and has a different rate of expansion and contraction than metal. Filler is just that - used to fill low spots - not fill holes.

Buy a quality welder... it's the only way to do it right.

That roof is toast. It may be easier to find a donor cab and cut the top off rather than try and repair the roof.

I can't watch you tube videos but if it's as bad as my cab, I would cut the top off. Once the paint was removed, found out that about 1/3 of the front of the roof was fiberglass.

It's a '72, so I'm pretty sure it's all metal (maybe not?)

It looks a bit like yours.

In the meantime, until I find a new cab... what are my options/suggestions?

If I can't find a donor cab... ?

Wait until you find a donor cab. No sense spending money on bondo or fiberglass.

I completely agree with these guys. I had some rust on mine, and it took a lot of work to remove it, but, no where near the rust you have. That cab isn't worth the effort. Where are you located? Someone on here might be able to find you a cab to swap out.

My truck was also from SoCal and that kind of rust is typical for a coastline. I just kept looking at Craigslist every week or two until I found one close by. It just takes some patience.

Consider yourself in luck! There are tons of trucks out there that have clean cabs on them! It's much, much more difficult to find clean trucks here in the Midwest, or the east coast that are clean, too much salt exposure from the roads when it snows!

With that much rusted areas it would be cheaper to make it in to the first coverable for those warm fun summer days & nights cruising around. That's your only options.

Or like others have done replaced the cab if you don't have a welder or know anyone who can do the repair for you.

Now many times when a truck body is in this bad of shape, you'll find that the cab mounts our in need of replacing also. So you should do a good inspection on them and think about your next plan for this truck.

Also check the floor pans as those our another areas of needed replacing.

Sorry if, I have opened a can of worms for you but these our the areas a person should check before the buy a old ford truck.

Notice all the older guys who drive classics is there the only ones who can afford to fix them the correct ways. Not filling the body full of bondo!

Orich
