03 f250 6.0 Transmission Problems

First post, 03 f250 6.0 threw codes p0700 and p0730. Local Ford Dealer saying need a new transmission @$4400 out the door. The truck started to have hard shifts around 3rd gear, noticed tow/haul light came on, pulled over and had truck towed to dealer. I thought you guys might know what questions to ask, what to watch out for, and what to do and not do. Truck has 165,000 miles on it. I'm reading as fast as I can. Any help or pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Side note: Got truck a few months ago. Truck had great service records for most of its life, until two years before I got it. Used it during the summer towing a 32 foot trailer from So Cal up through Oregon. Truck drove and towed like a dream! In my amateur opinion, seems like truck would have had transmission problems during all that towing, but what do I know, I freely admit I am an amateur.

Thanks for your time!

With all the service records is there record of regular filter fluid changes? Mark K will know what those codes translate to, so will a ATRA certified trans shop...in other words get a second opinion and estimate. At least call them and ask questions IG what those codes are how much is a rebuild etc...Someone should take pressure readings as well.

Neither of those codes are particularly useful. P0700 means the computer recognized SOMETHING is wrong with the trans, but it couldn't determine what was wrong. P0730 means that the gear ratio in the trans was wrong at one point.

There are many other trans codes that can pinpoint the problem, but they didn't set. My recommendation is to clear the codes and drive it again. If something is wrong codes will be stored and the light will flash again. Maybe it will set codes that will help diagnose what's wrong.

In my never to be humble opinion too many dealers are too quick to replace the trans when it probably could be fixed for a small fraction of the cost of a new trans. I think this is probably one of those.
