How to tell springs apart

Hello everybody!

I am needing to call upon the leaf spring gurus out there for some advice. I found a set of supposed X-Code springs for my truck at $75/side. Problem is, the salvage yard that has them has no idea if they are or are not genuine X-Codes. Man says that there is no stamp, no casting numbers, no painted-on numbers, nothing. Only thing he said he could do is measure bolt centers to ensure they will fit.

Besides looking for a casting number or the paint that I see on some, is there any other way to tell if these springs are genuine X-Codes?

I'd pass and buy new if you need them.

I took out my front stock leaf springs that were sagging 2 inches from factory height. X-code or not, used is risky.

It can be tough. To the naked eye they all look extremely similar. They all were a two leaf, full taper spring. I had a local guy come by the other week in the same situation as you. The yard told him they were X codes and they ended up being U codes.

If you end up going the route of getting new springs send me a message and I can supply you with some pricing!

Well, looks like I will be going the new route. I talked with the guy again and told him I was going to go ahead and pass. The possibility of them not being X-Codes and the fact that I really don't know their past life cycle kind of worries me. Plus, it seems that most of what everybody on here and other forums has done!

Ford is pretty proud of their X-Codes, as they are wanting $280/side!

From what I have seen the closest I can get are the 43-818 which provide 5260lbs. at the ground vs the X-Code 6000lbs. Next step up is the 43-818HDs which provide 7900lbs at the ground, and I do not believe I will ever have a need for that much spring.

My current code is VB. I assume that means I will have a fairly close to stock setup with the 43-818 springs?

I believe that VB means that V is your front spring pack and B is your rear pack. If you call ATS I would bet that he could goose that 43-818 pack to take on more weight if you need it. I run the 43-818's and am very happy but I do not hang a plow up there either.
