New motor oil change intervals

Ok I've had conflicting opinions on this subject and was wondering what you all thought.

I have heard that you change your oil right after the initial cam break in period then in 500, 1000, 3000 intervals.

The second most common suggestion was the same intervals minus the change after initial cam break in.

So I guess the question is whether or not it's important to change your oil after your initial cam break in?
