Mine is very predictable and 217 ECT on my outlook monitor iPad it starts ramping up right away, within a few seconds I can hear it is fully engaged. When I am towing, and the AC is on is ussually when I hear it the most. So, there must be some logic with respect to oil temp too, I just have not seen it not come on as yet.

Has anyone here posted a video showing the fan coming on? I'm not sure I've ever heard mine come on, but I haven't seen temperatures above 205 either. Watching Torque Pro, I see fan speed at about 1000 rpm on start up, but it usually sits under 400 rpm most of the time.
I have a cognitive hearing disorder so it's possible my brain can't relay the sound difference in a way I can differentiate. Either rpm reading sounds the same to me.

Mine was too,, 218. I went ahead and put one of the other clutches on before going to Arkansas this weekend with the camper n the bike. There's some hills in the Ozarks. Mine changed now and 208 is now the number.

Awesome imput

I thought for awhile it should kick in sooner or lower temp but thought it would have to be accomplished by tuning

wonder if the resistance in the AM Cltch circuit changed allowing this

Just replaced my fan clutch. In the process, I found this interesting post from "lilpooh" showing the insides of an OEM fan clutch:

Auto Enginuity Fan Clutch Testing - PowerStrokeArmy

Kinda wishing now I would have installed an aftermarket clutch.

Run6.0, what are these "one of the other clutches" you keep mentioning? I am pretty sure mine is starting to act up. It used to come on at 212, now it is spooling up around 218 causing me to run up to 228. I never got that hot in the past. I need to replace, so i am interested in cooler temps.

Mine fan clutch was coming on at 218. Put a new Hayden Fan clutch in and it now comes on around 208. The other thing I found interesting was I found a hole in my cold side CAC tube. When I replaced it, it seemed to lower my temps and I picked up fuel milage. I wondered if the truck was overfueling a bit due to the loss of air into the engine.

They kick on at 208 (which I'm really liking), and kick back off at 198. Oems are normally on at 218. They also run like a ****** when the ac is on. I think they are more reactive than oem ones. Sorry to hijack,, but a healthy cooling system doesn't need help. I've been up most all grades with most all configurations of loads. Just make sure you aren't masking an issue with a mod.
When I first noted the fan completely engaging at 230 degrees, I opted for the Heavy Duty fan clutch from a vehicle outfitted with the snow plow option. I noticed no difference as to when the fan fully engaged. I believe Ford uses several forms of feedback so the fan will come on at a reduced duty cycle (it is Pulse Width Modulated) and I can tell on a steady drive/load, the temp will creep up a bit, and the numbers drop occasionally back from 210 or so into the lower 190s without anything (road conditions, speed, etc) changing, and I hear no increase in fan noise. I always assumed it was the system partially engaging the fan, and it was somewhat working as it should. I just need it to engage sooner to stay ahead of the heat buildup on long grades, heavy loads. Using the "Tow Mode" control to fully engage the fan while on one of these climbs should handle that for me, just need to find info on how that "Tow Mode" indicator is powered...

I dunno about slow. During the winter I've run it up to 217 climbing a hill, actually held it right at 216 for almost 2-miles. Fan didn't come on. Typically 218 is the magic number.

Mine does do an "intermediate" lockup around 208-210 that makes the fan turn about 1/2 engine RPM. Maybe the Hayden clutch doesn't have this "intermediate" setting and is going full boogie at 208 instead?

However I've spent some time with the other clutch and it's very predictable. Changing the clutch alone should not change the programming at all. Maybe the aftermarket clutch needs less heat (heat isn't generated through ambient temp,, it's voltage that heats the clutch locking it up). If you command the fan on they always take a while to respond. I guess this wire mod would help test the quickness of the fan to respond.
It's likely that the fan clutch has lost some of it's viscous fluid, causing a delay in the operation of the fan.

Mine's ready for a fan clutch too. The adaptor/7.3 clutch is tempting, except for losing the FSS monitoring.

I'm beginning to wonder if my clutch is getting weak. The last time I pulled a large enclosed trailer (moving my kid to Denver), I had trouble with the ect going higher. It would hit 218, you could hear the fan start coming on, and it would go as high as 223 before dropping like a rock to around 200. Rinse lather repeat. I've pulled larger heavier trailers before and never went over 212, but I can't remember when the fan was kicking in for sure. Kinda wonder now if the fan wasn't starting to kick in faster before. What clutch have you been testing Anthony?

We did. Nice riding down there for sure!!

I will try n get a pic of the clutch box today. I think I saw it yesterday at the shop. It's a lifetime warranty,, but also has a harness plug at the clutch itself. Meaning the wire can be replaced if it get into the fan and doesn't mean the whole clutch is trash. I've yet to see how they would handle a trashed wire. Personally, I'd rather just replace the whole clutch if the wire gets tore up.
