Are our trucks considered a midsize now?
I was rather surprised at how small my truck looked when parked next to my boss’ 2 wheel drive 2005 F250 CCSB. His truck is taller and a tad longer. But really got me was a late model Toyota Tacoma crewcab shortbed that was parked next to me when I left my mom’s after lunch. The Toyota was practically the same height, length, and width as my truck. SIGH...

My brother has a 2013 (...or so) F250 4X4...not lifted. The bed sides are, I'd guess, about 6" higher than my '97 F350 4X4. The hood is also higher. I've never taken a tape measure to it...but the truck LOOKS HUGE! Not only Fords, but so many of these later models of all makes have this mid-50s, Harley Earl/Buick-like vibe...big, fat and bulbous. I much prefer the lean, crisp and chiseled lines of the OBS.

Our trucks are proudly aged with grace and patina. They have character and personality. If you roll up in one of these you'll be greeted with 'Now that's a truck'. because our generation of trucks have been utilized as - well - TRUCKS. Modern trucks are more like catfish. I don't see plenty of black window tinted lifted 150's doing the work than ours still do or have done. Modern trucks are a sign of new marketing to come and mostly used like a soccer-mom-SUV with a cargo bed.
We can work on our rigs - modify them - swap engines, gear and axles. Try this with an 2016/2019 model
We just love to hate ours. That's why we're here.

Yeah but even those ones with those little beds. You should tow a camper or something with one. It's like effortless compared to our old girls. They may not have good styling but they really have come a long way in capabilities since the 8th & 9th gen era..........I don't need or want one for anything personally but they sure are a whole lot more truck.
Funny, the cars are shrinking and even being discontinued and the trucks and suv's are growing.A push to encourage more folks to burn more fuel and drive the economy has hard as they can I suppose...........but at what cost to us all? A higher one than we're willing to pay I'm afraid. Oh well, trying to keep it about trucks. The new performance is some nice.If you haven't driven a newer truck, maybe you don't want too.It will make you see how dated we have things now haha.......but it's ok with me.

I hear you guys about the modern trucks being so capable. The topic of "dad ought to buy a new truck" has come up a number of times in my family (especially after long fishing trips when they experience some road noise and interior panels rattling in the cab), but to me, the best thing about my old truck is that it is old. It's used once or twice a week, so it's largely sitting on the driveway, utterly unremarkable, not advertising any reason to break into the garage.
I've heard plenty of stories about vehicles being broken into when parked in the bush or at primitive boat launches, but so far as I've seen, mine has been ignored by the scum of the earth. Admittedly I did install a pair of locking fuel caps some years ago, because the dual fuel tanks seemed like an obvious target in the bush. If I could have a remote self-destruct feature on a new truck to use if it was stolen, I'd probably see things differently...
This weekend I'll hopefully install all the new door gaskets I've been sitting on, so that should decrease the road noise a bit!

But on the other hand, 2 or 3 new truck payments are more than I paid for what I'm driving now. And it USUALLY goes fast ENOUGH...
heh.

If you look at the size of the engines today, compared to the old pushrod motors, you see why the hood and cab are so big and high. Of course they put 1/2 the engine under the cowl, making the need to raise the cab even more.
I actually saw a 2019 F150 that was "normal" sized. It was a city work truck with steel wheels and like 16"? tires. The bed was actually accessible from the side without a step ladder. I was impressed. Though you know NO ONE would be caught dead ordering something like that. Not with today's consumer mindset. It had manual radio and heater controls too!
